An engaging, entertaining history of the storage industry

Yes, I said "entertaining"! This is a MUST READ if you're new to the storage industry or simply if you want a colorful history of its past. Larry Freeman and Michelle Hope do a wonderful job making sure "Evolution of the Storage Brain" isn't just a technical manual. They start from the beginning so you can see how technologies have built upon themselves over the years and how they were used in customer case scenarios. Freeman also gives us an idea of where he believes the storage industry will be headed in the next 30 years.

Entertaining read, great primer for storage newbies

The Storage Brian was a quick read, and I think it would be a great for people to read who want to know more about storage at a high level. It does a good job explaining things in a not-so-technical way. It was a little slanted towards NetApp, but given the author works for them... it wasn't too bad. I would have enjoyed some more side stories or details about the stuff that happened behind the scenes. In all it was a worth while read.

About the Author
Carroll L. Shry, Jr., is presently an instructor at the Frederick County Public Schools Career and Technology Center in the Principles of Landscaping and Nursery Management program in Maryland. His credentials include a BS degree in Agricultural Education/Horticulture from the University of Maryland and an MS in Agricultural Education/Horticulture from West Virginia University. Mr. Shry is an active member of many professional organizations including the American Horticultural Society, the American Nurserymen's Association and the National FFA Alumni Association. He is past President of NAAE (NVATA), a Certified Professional Horticulturist and owns and operates his own landscape business.

H. Edward Reiley was involved in agriculture as a member of the American Rhododendron Society for which he won a Gold Medal and served as president and in agricultural education as a former Director of Vocational Education for the Frederick County Board of Education. He retired in 1981. He was a member of various professional organizations including the FFA Alumni Association in which he was a lifetime member. Mr. Reiley was named Vocational Educator of the year in Maryland for 1978 and received the Honorary American Farmer degree in 1979. Mr Reiley taught agriculture in secondary school and continuing education classes before working in a supervisory capacity. Up until the time of his death on March 16, 2008 Mr. Reiley bred new varieties of rhododendrons and azalea hybrids as well as managed a nursery.

About the Author
Mike Peng is the Jindal Chair of Global Business Strategy at the Jindal School of Business, University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). At UTD, he founded the Center for Global Business, where he serves as the executive director. Professor Peng was also recently named a fellow with the Academy of International Business. He holds a bachelor's degree from Winona State University, Minnesota, and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Seattle. Prior to joining UTD, Professor Peng was on the faculty at the Ohio State University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and University of Hawaii, where he taught students at all levels and often served as a faculty trainer and consultant. In addition, he has held visiting or courtesy professorial appointments in Australia, Britain, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and the United States. This award-winning professor is widely regarded as one of the most prolific and influential scholars in global business and has garnered many research grants for his work. The United Nations and the World Bank have cited his work in major publications. Truly global in scope, his research focuses on firms' strategies in regions such as Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, and North America. He has published about 50 articles in leading academic journals and authored three books. Great book for International Business/Strategy class

As a professor, I have used several books for International Business classes and I have to say there are Global Business books that should have been titled as International Politics or American Business. This book has a good balance between country analyses such as EU regulation, privatization in emerging economies, and company perspectives such as entering into foreign countries, creating synergy between divisions. The cases cover companies from a lot of countries; they provide enough information to complement the chapters but are not too long so that it's easy to read through. My students and I enjoyed this book very much!

Teach Our Students How to Fish

As a PhD student teaching global strategy and international business, I like this book, not only for its comprehensive theoretical framework, but also for its openness for a series of debates on globalization. The theoretical framework can help students analyze the complex global business environment. More importantly, a series of debates can open their eyes, and can help them build more skills to deal with challenges in a globalizing world (think about the current buzz on offshoring and outsourcing).

Many textbooks attempted to teach students how to arrive at "correct" answers. They just tell students what is already known, and do not describe the sorts of problems that the professional may be asked to solve and the variety of techniques available for their solution. This textbook deviates from the rest of pack, because the author tries to integrate many new fronts (and yes, even debates!) in the academic and practitioner world (see the long list of references) and cultivates a "global mental set" based on his rich experience in many countries. What is most refreshing is that the author does not give a single answer or simple evaluation for many questions, but provides many possible approaches to widen the reader's mindset. In fact, every chapter has a beefy section devoted to "Debates and Extensions," with no given conclusions.

Even vivid business cases will fade quickly and be forgotten in this dramatically changing world. So a set of "divergent thinking skills" will play a more important role in helping students develop long-term capabilities in their career success. Through this book, students will learn how to recognize and evaluate many problems to which no unequivocal solution has yet been given, find an arsenal of techniques (industry-based view, resource-based view, and institution-based view) for approaching these problems, and develop "global mental sets" to judge the relevance of these techniques and to evaluate the possible solutions.

The ancient Chinese philosopher Laozi once said: "Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day; but teach him how to fish and you will feed him for a lifetime." Truly, this exciting book may teach our students how to fish!

pretty dry, but hey, it's a textbook; what do you expect. I would not buy this book for casual reading; but if you need it for a class you really don't have a choice anyway....

Beware of the Kindle version ... probably better off getting one used if you have time

I will review the content in a bit (and may raise the rating appropriately) ... I got the Kindle edition as my training chief wasn't able to get a hard copy back from previous students in time for the class. First of all, they don't tell you that the product is only licensed to be on two devices ... so, of my smartphone, my desktop, and my laptop, I now get to pick two. This is a lot more annoying than you think when trying to use this in class. It also won't let you display the pages as a two-up (ie, left page and right page at the same time), even though it's a direct electronic copy of the original - all graphics, tables, etc. are formatted correctly and inline with text where they belong (which is why it isn't getting one star).

How to Kill Passion in Your Classroom

"Although the stages of the decision-making process form the structure that shapes it, the interaction among the stages give the decision-making process its energy" (154).
This is academic-speak for, "Our decision-making model is simplistic and rigid. Groups of real humans will never follow it, but we don't have a better model for something this complicated (at least not one suitable for undergrads)."

-It's comprehensive. It covers every "stage" and "process" anyone has ever invented to try and describe group interaction.
-It has many useful citations.

== WRITING STYLE ==
What really sets this book apart is its writing style. Passive sentences abound. Sentences are reworded into complex monstrosities in order to avoid the implied "you." (However, implied "you" is perfectly OK for sidebars and tables?) Obvious information is needlessly included in most sentences, as if this were a Terms of Service, instead of a textbook.

Speaking of needless inclusion, the biggest problem with this book is repetition. The authors rehash the same information over and over to inflate their page count. Because they need to take up more space, they resort to repetition. This in turn wastes more space, which results in a higher page count without introducing new thoughts. It's simply the process of taking an idea from the last sentence and recycling it. The publisher probably bears some blame for this.

You might think I'm just a student who doesn't like to read. No. Craig, Blomberg, and Hubbard's "Introduction to Biblical Interpretation" is 400+ pages of difficult material, but no space was wasted. Not so with this text. I had more fun deciphering quantitative analysis journal articles than I did reading /Small Group and Team Communication/, and those journals get pretty dry.

DeVito's /Human Communication/ and Flatley's /Business Communication/ cover much of the same material as this text, but DeVito and Flatley are worlds better. Not because they have color stock photos, but because they write in an engaging style. Consider this sentence from p. 154 of SGTC:
"The decision-making process is most effective when we take the evaluation stage into account in the beginning, as we are defining the problem."
This could be written, "The evaluation stage runs throughout entire decision-making process, starting from when you begin defining the problem." Sounding like a bureaucrat isn't an advantage.

== CONTENT ==
If I knew nothing outside of what this book says, I would suspect that the field of Communication had no good models for small group communication. As I noted at the beginning of this review, many of the models and theories are forced and outdated. But that's not all. The chapter on group management styles lists a number of researchers and their theories. But rather than explaining any one theory in depth or comparing and contrasting the various theories, this book puts them all in a blender and then teaches the homogeneous purée as fact.

True, all survey textbooks have problems summarizing current research without delving into PhD minutia; /Small Group and Team Communication/ just happens to suffer from this problem in an above-average way.

== CONCLUSION ==
If you want to kill your student's enthusiasm, make them buy this book.
If anyone knows of a better survey text, please comment and recommend it. Maybe I can save some freshmen from having to read this in a few years.

It might fill the bill..or not.

Was considering this book for a class but was disappointed. like most textbooks, there are few that have anything new to say or find a way to better present their respective materials. Th information included in the book (the title says it all) is oK, but not fresh. I don't know, maybe there isn't anything new in this field. Nonetheless, if you have never read a book on this topic or you are looking for a good review, this book might fill the bill.
