Robert Wolff makes Marx's forbidding work fun

Robert Wolff confronts Marx's most demanding writing, the development of the value form in the first chapter of Capital, that even the most serious commentators shy away from. But Wolff's real revelation is that Marx's writing can be fun. Wolff turns the dialectic into a Jewish joke 'Mrs Feinshmeck's blintzes', to help the Germanic medicine down.

For all that, Wolff's treatment is up there with the most serious exegetes of Marxism. Most pointedly Wolff explains that Marx's style is not contradictory in itself, but an attempt to capture the essence of a contradictory world

Irony and style in Marx's Capital

"Moneybags Must Be So Lucky" is the arresting title of a series of lectures held by University of Massachusetts at Amherst philosopher Robert Paul Wolff. They form the content of the Romanell-Phi Beta Kappa lectures held in 1984-1985 at that institution, and deal with the question of irony and style in Marx's "Capital". Unlike the famous work by S.S. Prawer on literary references in Marx's work, Wolff is not primarily concerned with literature or allusions in the book, but rather with the purely stylistic tropes applied, in particular those of the first chapters of Volume 1. The lectures first take us through a digression on the philosophical notions of essence and appearance, from Plato to Hegel, and the notion of Socratic irony, where (in a somewhat controversial reading) he interprets Socrates as dealing with irony at a level which implicates the speaker in the subject of irony. Another trope introduced is the notion of inversion, where some abstraction of real things becomes reified to such a degree that the concrete appears to be the manifestation of the abstract, instead of the other way round. Wolff then shows how these concepts are combined in Marx's dealing with the nature of value in "Capital", in particular the opposition between the appearance of exchange, money, price and so forth, and their underlying realities in production and value. The author here makes an interesting contrast with the similar inversion manoeuvre found in Plato's famous allegory of the cave: there, the appearance is dark and irrational, and the reality is bright and rational. For Marx, however, capitalism appears to be the realm of "liberty, equality, property and Bentham", but the reality is the dark abode of production, where none may gain admission except on business.

A number of quotations from the text may serve to explain its conclusions on Marx's use of language in "Capital", which I think are well-founded and insightful. Wolff notes: "to talk about this world (...) Marx's discourse must permit him to represent the quantitative relationships that actually obtain in capitalist production and exchange.(...) Furthermore, [it] must permit critics like Marx to articulate the structure of mystification that conceals the exploitative and self-destructive character of capitalism. (...) In addition, (...) the language of political economy must serve to implicate the speaker in the very patterns of mystification that are being exposed. (...) And finally, this language cannot be entirely self-contained in the scope of its theoretical applicability. It must offer resources for an eventual transcendence of the mystifications of the capitalist market". This is well said, and Wolff has, himself using various jokes and forms of stylistic wit in the process, in this way made the most inaccessible part of Capital - the endless digressions on linens and coats and the nature of value in Ch. 1, 2, and 6 - easier to understand and more pleasant reading.

One of the best books I've read all year

Wolff's book is worth the price just for the unpacking of the difference between being a lapsed-Catholic atheist and being a never-been-a-believer atheist. Beyond that, Wolff demonstrates that Marx's seemingly obscure, convoluted writing - especially in the first chapter of Capital - serves a deeper purpose. Marx uses satire to uncover the absurdity of "bourgeois economists" and the contradictory nature of their thought. A very readable work that will make anyone's reading of Marx not only more enjoyable, but more valuable, too.

Necessary Book

Certainly presents an unorthodox perspective, which is probably not far from reality Not recommended for orthodox believers, who have sufficient superior knowledge to enable them to ignore or revile any unbeliever who suggest they examine their unsupported beliefs in the light of fact and logic.

The language is somewhat archaic, but not a problem. The book ends with the comment: "the remainder of the book is missing from the paper edition".

A must have for those in Journalism Field.

This book is being used as a textbook in my Media Management class, and I have learned so much from this book already as an aspiring reporter. Even if I am never in management in the journalism field, this book helps me understand the kinds of things my boss may go through, so that I can better work with them. It discusses everything from leadership to the different theories of different types of managers. I hate that this book is out of print, but I still encourage anyone in the journalism field to get their hands on this book while they can.

A Thrilling Conclusion to An Engrossing Trilogy

The Night People can finally rest at ease. The evil is gone. Done with. And while the memories of the vicious pranks, and horrific murders are still emblazoned in everyone's minds, they are nothing more than a part of the past. Everything is back to normal. At last. The friends who are still breathing - Dana, Jamie, Nate, Shark, Lewis - are trying to put their lives back together, and still meet late at night at their beloved hangout, Nights, where they can forget about the past. After all, it was Angelica Fear's ancient spirit that was wreaking havoc. And now Angelica is dead. Burned in a fire that destroyed her body, soul, and spirit for all eternity. But if it's true. If Angelica is truly dead, then how come Jamie still feels an evil spirit lingering around. And what did Angelica actually mean when she screamed out, "The evil lives," through the crackling of the flames.

It is a huge rarity for me to read an entire trilogy/book series all in a row based solely on the fact that I usually get bored with characters. That obviously doesn't apply to Stine's books, for after finishing MOONLIGHT SECRETS, I quickly moved onto MIDNIGHT GAMES, and finished up the trilogy with DARKEST DAWN, all in a period of two days. Stine's characters truly grow on you through each book, as you get the opportunity to see them over a period of time, and see how their personalities change after each bought of evil they encounter. Narrated by Jamie's sensible, caring voice, DARKEST DAWN is a marvelous ending to an engrossing trilogy.

Final Fate of the night people

The horror is over or is it? Jamie and her cusion think so,after all they killed Angelica Fear in Jamie's Garage.Then Why is a blackbird with one eye terrorizing them? Plus what did Angelica mean when she said the Evil lives? Is the blackbird Angelica returning from the dead to seek revenge or can it be Jamie imaging things???You'll have to read the book to find out.

Exciting Ending!

Several months have passed since "Midnight Games," and the night people have gone on with their lives, no longer in fear of Angelic Fear. Jamie is the only one who still believes that the curse lives on. She still has nightmares of being possessed by Angelic Fear. She runs across a mysterious bracelet that is similar to the Fear amulet.

More deaths start to the occur. Jamie's cousin, Dana, starts to wonder if she has lost her mind. After awhile Jamie starts to wonder the same thing, especially after she starts seeing the Fear Mansion that was demolished over a year ago. Is it Angelic Fear back from the grave again? Or is it someone else?

Jamie becomes the main character in "Darkest Dawn," the third and final book in the "Fear Street Night" trilogy. Die-hard fans from the original books will enjoy the continuation and conclusion to the Simon and Angelic Fear storyline. I was disappointed that the character Dana Fear didn't have a bigger part. She is a much stronger and likeable character than Jamie. The plot is a little darker than the first two books. Overall, I did enjoy the exciting ending to the series.

Arduino is not a new kid in the block, and many things are written about it, but you can be sure that not everything written is useful. With this book Francis Perea will help you if you are new to microcontrolers or you just want to have a nice reference around. The autor knows how to focus on the procedure and the key facts that you have to understand to keep you improving your skills about Arduino. He will guide you in a series of step-by-step assemblies using most common components and with a very well design path to Arduino Knowledge. Definitely a must read and a must have reference book about Arduino.

Best Book about Arduino

For a long time I've been reading books as a beginner / advanced Arduino , especially to meet the training needs of people who are new , including very early levels . It is not easy to have a good guide to all the possibilities of Arduino while it easy to assimilate by readers. In this book I found all this and more. All kinds of examples that introduce from the simplest to the most complicated work , easy to digest and implement that cover all needs. A global version of all well explained possibilities. I highly recommend it .

Arduino is a new world for me !! I came to this book through the experience of their well-known authors in the field and to learn from scratch. I have a world of possibilities that can go through the clear examples of each and every one of its possibilities . I am getting interesting results in teaching with students in my class. The best book of its kind .

I have spent thousands of dollars and built a sizable library over the years on the subject of spirits and their production with an eye on some day opening a cidery and or a small distillery. Without a doubt this is the most comprehensive and informative book I have found. This book approaches the subject matter in a scientific strait forward manner supplying details at a level necessary to anyone interested in entering the industry. If I had to pick one book on alcoholic beverage production this is the the book .It is the only book I have found that spells out the details without the reader feeling the authors either don't know the subject matter or they are intentionally omitting "trade secrets".
Mandatory reading for everyone in the business or thinking of getting in.
Note : I require all new employees to read this book. It is not cheap but worth every penny.

A must have for anyone interested in production of spirits or wine/beer products

This is possibly the most comprehensive book on the subject of fermented beverages, but more than that also does a fantastic job on distilled spirits as well. From the chemistry of yeast fermentation, to the sugar content of various must substrates, to gas chromatographs of spirits after distillation it truly covers a massive amount of material.

I am a researcher, working in the spirits field and use this book regularly for guidelines on production of specific spirits, and to get an idea of the chemical constituents of various spirits.

Highly recommended.

Spectacular Reference

Very comprehensive book on the production of wines, beer, and liquors. While I have a lot of texts on these subjects, this one covers lots of details and methodolgies specific to the production of Port, or Sherry for example. Both quantitative and qualitative information on each subject make the book unique in my opinion.
