What is Truly Celtic, what is Archetypal...?
By John McLaughlin
I don't claim to follow all of this book; for a start, much of it refers, in summaries or in commentaries, to Old Irish legends I have not read (I don't know the language), so a lot of it is "argumentum ad ignorantium," and that's no fault of the author. But it reads like a dream, much of it flowing from dream to story to legend and back to dream -- fascinating writing, all through this book. I'm not sure of the connection made, between Celtic and Native American stories and legends, if there's in fact no cultural contact between these two far-apart civilizations -- but who knows, records of ancient and medieval seafaring is very probably fragmentary, from what I do know of things medieval, and there's a Viking runic stone in Newport, Rhode Island, so right there is a marker of Transatlantic crossing, almost a thousand years before Columbus. H'm. Also, there is a striking amount of what I would call Jungian reference in the text -- the name of Jung does not appear -- so who knows, perhaps the implication -- never asserted in this text -- is that we have real evidence here of what Jung would call a genuine archetypal symbolism as opposed to cultural contact around the globe, including contact with Celtic Ireland of near-prehistoric times. At any rate, there is a considerable amount of parallel assertion of similar narrative structure in Native American and Celtic Irish didactic dream legends, and, like the rest of this swiftly moving, swirling text, it is very plausibly done.

So why am I so fascinated by it? One answer, I think, is that it carries me back to re-reading WB Yeats, an Anglo-Irishman who obviously repeatedly dipped into this stream of Celtic myth and legend, and that alone makes me want to find out more -- much more -- about the subject. Also, as I've said, the writing -- apart from a few hiccups in proofreading -- is just lovely, carrying one along from start to finish and ready to dive back in again. Is this a didactic book, with a stylistic level of craftsmanship rare in such books? That's my hunch. If didactic, what is its lesson? That Truth and Loyalty to one's word are crucial in following through in becoming a true Hero King, such as we all might become (even if we cop not follow Joseph Campbell's "monomyth" all the way)? If that's the kind of message you'd be interested in, I think you would enjoy reading -- and re-reading -- this compelling work of art.
