Good read

I really liked this book, my only problem with it is that it's one of those that everything kind of becomes too perfect. After all those years apart, they suddenly just move in together like nothing ever happened, it seems a little crazy. but again, it was a good book, definitely a good story and I got really involved with the characters.

I loved, LOVED this book! Perfect Timing is a brilliant combination of romance, good story telling and intrigue! I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy women’s fiction, as well as those who are romance purists. The characters are well developed and the author’s use of a past/present storyline is spot on. Above all, Spinella’s dialogue is a page-turner, witty and meaningful, bringing a real voice to each character. I rooted for Isabel from start to finish. Having read the author’s first novel, Beautiful Disaster, I was anticipating a hero-type of guy that would be irresistible. She delivers, not by repeating the same winning character, Flynn, in Beautiful Disaster but by bringing a whole different kind of sympathetic and unexpected hero to the story.

Laura Spinella is the only author I have ever read that can move from the present to the past so seamlessly. The past is where I got to know and love Aiden and Isabel, even with their speckled histories. The present is where I got to hope that true love, first love, is a real thing and will overcome all the obstacles. It was so touching to see how their friendship progressed from a young love to an adult relationship. Aiden is truly one of a kind, the kind that every girl hopes to have in her life.

As the story is told, there are twists and turns that I never saw coming. One in particular had me setting the book down and making me think about what was being told. This twist truly makes the story one that I will be talking about for a long while and be happily sharing with all my fellow readers. This is a book of love conquering all with a ton of emotion and amazing writing.

This is a book that I will recommend to EVERYONE. Laura Spinella wrote another amazing book that is sure to touch anyone who reads it.

Ridiculously Erotic and Unexpectedly Intense

Well. I certainly wasn't expecting THAT. "That" being the emotional jolt I felt reading the sinfully stimulating sex scenes between these three distinctly drawn men. What in the world did I just read?! I'm humming with emotion myself. Questioning society's traditional definition of a "relationship," and cheering the realization that love comes in so many forms and all are to be cherished.

By the end of this book, Gray, Jack, and Mason felt like a cohesive triplet (is that the right descriptor?). I just felt like the addition of Mason to the already established relationship between Jack and Gray was the right, organic thing to do. The each brought something special to the other two, making the relationship complete. I can't imagine any of these guys stepping out on the others because they are so right together.

And "thanks" to the author for keeping it real--these are "men" after all, so OF COURSE they all had trouble sharing their "feelings" with each other. Such a "guy" thing to do, isn't it? I heard an explanation of the M/F dynamic one time that has stuck with me:

A woman says "If I didn't love you, I wouldn't tell you that I loved you." A man says, "If I didn't love you, I wouldn't BE WITH YOU."

A man expects his actions to speak louder than his words. Just like Gray, Jack, and Mason.

I read the blurb and bought this, expecting a titillating tale. I wasn't prepared to get as emotionally invested as I had.

Mason is a college drop-out working as assistant manager/bartender in a bar in Durham, NC. He said goodbye to his Duke tuition and expenses when he defied his parents wishes regarding his future a few years prior. Oddly, his parents felt this "gay thing" was a phase he'd outgrow--but they couldn't abide a child not accepting the career choices they made.

While working, Mason meets Jack and Gray--two beat officers who are investigating a string of robberies in Durham. Mason finds the duo sexy, but can't imagine these burly men are gay. Still, the officers come into the bar time and again, and the subtle cues they leave lead Mason to imagine more than a straight fantasy.

It soon becomes clear that Jack and Gray are interested in Mason--as a third. This doesn't work for Mason, however, because he's afraid of coming between them--emotionally, not physicially. He's dying to "come" between them. Bah-dum-dum.

Anywho, Jack and Gray manage to have their sexy way with Mason. There are light BDSM elements--bondage, spanking, orgasm denial--and the pair think this is a great deal. Mason freaks. He's getting too attached to his fantasy, and is sure the bottom will fall out and he'll crash hard.

There's a lot of angst, not the least of which surrounds the fact that Jack and Gray are closeted, despite living together. And, when Mason comes under fire in the robbery-ring, it's an eye-opener.

I really enjoyed this. The sex was...nuclear? Yep, probably that hot. The story was interesting and believable. Have a sexy cop fantasy? This menage delivers--times two.

Fitting In by Silvia Violet rocked my world. Two sexy cops, Gray and Jack could fulfill any man’s fantasy, but they have chosen bartender Mason as the object of their affection. Gray and Jack meet Mason at a local hang out and are immediately smitten with the young man. The feelings are definitely reciprocated by Mason as well.

Ms. Violet delivers a story of not only extremely scorching sex but one of insecurities, questioning and love. Gray and Jack are in a committed relationship, but are deep in the closet as two of the police forces finest. When they meet Mason, who is out and proud, the men question the ramifications of denying who they truly are in the public eye. The inner turmoil they face radiates through the pages as they ponder these questions. Ms. Violet’s characterization of Gray reduced me to tears as he tortured himself psychologically in the need to please both his lovers. Gray, the ever-present dominant in the trio must learn that sometimes one is dominant by actually letting go. Jack is the peace maker. I adored his demeanor, his sense of nurture and his whit.
Mason’s character was lovely and sweet, deep-rooted with angst as all his life he was told that being homosexual was only a passing thing by his family. Mason has had relationships in the past but all have failed as he never truly felt satisfied until he met Gray and Jack, thus leaving him with a foreboding sense of doom.

Silvia Violet delivers a pure and true connection between the three men and also a connection to the reader. Once I began to read I was not able to put the book down, as I was meshed into the lives of Gray, Jack, and Mason.

Fitting In is not only a story of three very hot men, but a story of growth and maturity. A story of learning to accept what is freely given to you and taking a chance on each other and love.

Dynamite from 'Dynamite' - Vampi vs. Drac!

I'm not a comic reader, per se, not since I was a kid, when I couldn't get my sweaty little paws on enough Marvel + DC issues every month. Always an avid Vampirella aficianado, I love it when Dynamite compiles a distinct multi-issue story arc and publishes it as a trade paperback. This one is no exception.

It covers a six issue series by Joe Harris and Ivan Rodriguez, plus an additional Dracula short and includes a cover gallery with all six covers by Joseph Michael Linsner (Dawn).

This ain't your 'Twilight' crap, 'Vampire Diaries' teen tripe or even 'True Blood' melodrama - this is Vampi's terrain, and it's all her own. Even Stoker's immortal monster plays second fiddle fangs to the first badass female sexy supernatural siren who's had the longest run in comic/magazine/paperback/trading card history. And no other character has done more crossover stories with other comic characters in the last 20 years.

Great story and artwork makes this one an essential read, even if vampires isn't necessarily your thing. AND it's a great way to come down from all the bad acid of those other spineless chick romance emo vampire tales that are little more than enemic and in sore need of a blood transfusion and a pair of balls.

Stick with the first and best in this genre, the ubiquituous and eternal Vampirella. Highly recommended, along with the other Dynamite TPB's available (read my reviews for details)

Definition. The present perfect verb tense refers to a physical or mental action or a state of being happening or existing before the present."

Hold it right there. If this definition ("before the present") does not fit the PAST tense, please tell me what does. Why go on? You have to start out right to end up right. There's no way to get there from here.

THE FIRST CHRISTIAN MASTERPIECE OF PHILOSOPHICAL APOLOGETICS

Origen (185-254) was an early Alexandrian scholar and theologian, and one of the most distinguished writers of the early Church. His belief in pre-existence and universal reconciliation were condemned by a council in the 6th century, but he is considered one of the most important church fathers. Celsus was a 2nd century Greek philosopher, best known for his book, 'On the True Doctrine: A Discourse Against the Christians, which is the earliest known comprehensive attack on Christianity, and was critiqued by Origen in this book.

Professor Chadwick notes in his very helpful Introduction, "There are perhaps few works of the early Christian Church which compare in interest or in importance with that which is here translated. The 'Contra Celsum' stands out as the culmination of the whole apologetic movement of the second and third centuries."

Origen (who normally adopted an allegorical method of interpreting the Bible) wrote, "in Christianity... there will be found to be no less profound study of the writings that are believed; we explain the obscure utterances of the prophets, and the parables in the gospels, and innumerable other events or laws which have a symbolical meaning." (Pg. 12) He argues, "What man who is urged to study philosophy and throws himself into some school of philosophers... comes to do this for any reason except that he has faith that this school is better?... it is by unreasoning impulse that people come to the practice of, say, Stoicism and abandon the rest..." (Pg. 13)

He later admits, "Do not suppose that it is not consistent with Christian doctrine when in my reply to Celsus I accepted the opinions of those philosophers who have affirmed the immortality or the survival of the soul. We have some ideas in common with them." (Pg. 182) He also grants that "if there is any subject among those that need study among men which is baffling to our comprehension, the origin of evil may be reckoned as such." (Pg. 237)

He states, "We are careful not to raise objections to any good teachings, even if their authors are outside the faith, nor to seek an occasion for a dispute with them, nor to find a way of overthrowing statements which are sound." (Pg. 434)

Origen's book is fascinating reading---on many levels (even for those critics of Christianity who are reading it to discern the opinions of Celsus!).

An excellent source

This is an excellent translation, and window into the thoughts of one of the earliest Christian thinkers. Origin was a philosopher, theologian, and early apologist.

Be warned: this book is the size of a Bible! However, it gives an early Christian response to pagan jabs at Christianity. This allows a glimpse into what pagans were thinking.

I bought this book to test Morton Smith's "Jesus the Magician." It was a compelling book. However, it lost it's appeal once I read the source. Smith cherry-picked and stretched (that is an understatement)a handful of verses. After reading Contra-Celsum, I could see why his hypothesis lost steam.

Alexandrine Gnostic Debates:
The Gnostic devaluation of the created order was a depreciation of the Old Testament, greatly accentuated by a thorough exploitation of the Pauline antithesis of Law and Gospel. The Gnostics used to contrast the Hebrew Bible with the Gospel proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Implications of the designation 'Old Testament' frequently, by early Christians, was common enough to be suggestive. Titus Flavius Clemens, known better today as Clement of Alexandria. Although born to pagan parents, Clement realized that there must be a deeper meaning to life than the mundane pursuit. "To Know God Is To Love Others," was the Alexandrine motto of salvation which he developed with his disciple Origen, both defending against the dangerous Gnostic structure of beliefs that became a very fierce movement at Alexandria.

Biblical Catechist:
Origeneus Adamantius (AD 185-254), was a student of Amon Saccha and cofounder of neo-Platonic philosophy. A staunch Christian believer, the greatest by far among ante-Nicene writers, Origen was a prolific Biblical scholar, and the first great theologian. According to the Coptic Church Synexarium, Origen was born of Christian parents in Alexandria, studied and started his life there, at an early age, as a Grammarian and Catechist. Appointed by bishop Demetrius, to succeed Clement as head of the catechetical school in Alexandria, Origen fervently carried on his mission for a dozen of years, and with surging numbers of students, was helped by Dionysius and Heraclas, future bishops of Alexandria. Origen was invited to Antioch, Athens, Arabia, Ephesus, and Rome, to arbitrate and settle early Church doctrinal differences. In 215, as a result of Emperor Caracalla's furious attack upon the Alexandrians, Origen's work at the school was interrupted and he left to Caesaria, Palestine.

Celsus Origenal Treatise:
Celsus' words--which seventy years earlier, added up to a full treatise are conveyed to us only through, 'Contra Celsum,' written by the genius Alexandrine thinker Origen. Hoffmann, cannot be sure whether the Christian teacher played 'fast and free' with the pagan thinker, so in reconstructing Celsus' diatribe we are dependent on seeing Origen as a man of virtue, temperance, and irrefragable rightness. Origen quotes Celsus freely, lengthily, and smugly. 'Freely,' in this case, means unsystematically--which accounts for the need, at times, to 'conjoin' snippets of Celsus that Origen has separated and to separate bits that Origen has joined. ... And like all priggish Oxford Movement-philes, Mr. Pearse quotes me quoting Origen quoting Celsus with equal zeal, if less impressive purpose, taking special exception to the following: "Christians, it is needless to say, utterly detest each other. They slander each other constantly with the vilest forms of abuse and cannot come to any sort of agreement in their teachings... Like so many sirens they chatter away endlessly and beat their breasts. The world (they say to their shame) is crucified to me and I to the world." (Hoffmann pp. 91 re: Origen, Contra Celsum, 5.64)

Hoffmann defends Celsus with great enthusiasm, advocating that his 'intellectual duty here was to Celsus, not to Origen, and Celsus's valuable point is about Christian heterodoxy and sectarian rivalry--Gnostics, ascetics, 'orthodox' and others. He sarcastically debates that, "The ancient philosopher's anti-Christianism: Celsus was a pagan nettle in the emerging garden of sweetly planted Orthodoxy. Origen, the gardener, knew a thing or two about weeds, the proof of which is that it took nearly 2000 years for the nettles to reappear in the form of rationalist critiques of Christian dogma and Celsus-like harangues against the absurdity of Christian belief and believers."
Celsus was no atheist, claims Dr. Hoffmann who in spite confirms that, "The resonance between Celsus and modern secularism and atheism is significant, even startling. And despite Origen's efforts to minimize the damage Celsus's treatise had caused to the Church when it appeared -some 70 years or so before Origen penned his response - the main value of the Christian apologist's defense was an inadvertent one, noticed first by philosophers in the Enlightenment: Origen had preserved a large portion of the very critique of the Christian faith he had sought to eradicate."

Professor Henry Chadwick whose work is not only trusted, but greatly admired by scholars, was recently criticized by one of Celsus defenders, quoting a French saying that, ''translations, like women, are either beautiful or faithful but never both." Chadwick's literal translation, he protests, largely fails to convey the point that, "Celsus knew that Christian Orthodoxy was a result of episcopal intolerance, not an act of providence reported by the bishops. Here what is wanting in fidelity accurately displays the fact that Celsus knew that Christianity in the year 180 was not a garden but a barnyard full of squawking hens. And Origen (as Porphyry knew) was one of them."

Feeling FOTJ Fatigue despite a fair entry

Vortex has a lot of action And Denning does know action. He does a commendable job not only juggling all of the various soap opera story-lines in FOTJ but he does so while giving us the feeling that things are really finally moving. Not happy with the Jedi Council lately? Denning remedies that. Thought Ben and Vestara were too cutesy in Allies? He tweaks that relationship too. So there was a feeling of resolution of several ongoing plots. Whether I agree with all of them is debatable.

Abeloth is more confusing and relentless than in Abyss. Why she's after Luke's old flames I don't know but I hope that goes somewhere. I really loved Denning's Luke. I haven't always in the past but Luke is as wise, powerful and understated as we want him to be. Denning creates with Abeloth something pretty un-Star Warsy. It's new. It's a Force driven David Lynch realm. But I mostly approve of the risks Denning takes by making the Force cringeworthy.

I won't call this a page turner as I didn't tear through it. I did however notice that it's more what the fans have been clamoring for in this series. There are definite consequences in Vortex. A fine entry in a fairly thin series.

Maybe it's just me, but these very long star wars series really seem to be stretching their various plotlines out much too long. I think fate of the jedi has done a better job than legacy of the force at keeping my attention, but it still seems that each book in FOTJ hits long boring parts. It seems many of the star wars plot devices used before are just being continually recycled with slight tweaks. I understand that in order for a disaster to truly affect the great Luke Skywalker it has to be massively universe threatening. But it seems as if the whole universe leans on him a bit much. So I really do think having him step down as grandmaster was a fantastic step in the right direction to limit him calling on other jedi for help. Unfortunately he seems to have no problems solving every issue thrown at him.

That being said, the Luke/Ben storyline in this book was much more interesting for me than the previous book. But I found the Han/Leia sections to be extremely forgettable, including what was supposed to be their big action sequence in this book. And as much as I love star wars, I think the best books do not involve these galaxy spanning political problems. Not because I think politics are boring, but because I don't think any author has been able to introduce a political thread in star wars that can stretch through 6 or 9 books and keep it from becoming stale. I did like the fact that the jedi council finally showed some resolution in the deadlock they have been suffering through.

Overall I can't say this was a bad book, but I certainly didn't find it an overly exciting addition to the series. More of a place holder for a series that probably could have been formatted to fit 6 books allowing for a tighter more streamlined exciting series.

Fate of the Jedi's best

Well, first things first. Easily the best Star Wars book I've read in a long, long time. Anything that can almost bring me to tears (a 22-year old college student) I consider good stuff. Two scenes in particular (don't want to spoil it) made the book worth it. They were heavily emotionally written and worked extremely well.

Denning has shown that again he knows Star Wars. I realize that many people are upset about the direction Star Wars has gone, so if you view the book with those tinted-glasses, then you might be disappointed. But I feel that if you read it with an open mind, then you will enjoy it as I did.

One of the big complaints about the recent books is the lack of continuity between authors. I believe this has been fixed a great deal. Whether the authors are learning from mistakes or if the bigger gaps between books has to do with it I don't know, but you can definitely see the difference. Subplots from the previous book (slavery, the trial) are carried over and are written very similarly.

Speaking of the trial, that way of story-telling, along with the news reporting, are two things that help keep Star Wars fresh for me. It's not been done outside this series and I really like the way it is done.

Also, there is a lot that happened in this book. If you've been thinking that this series has just been meandering around without really having a point, then you'll really like this one. Allies was a lot of fighting, but in this one the Jedi actually "do" something after just sitting around for five books. So that definitely is a plus.

Overall, I highly recommend it. The Sith are well done, the Fallanassi are creepy as always, and the Jedi are just awesome.

One more thing: Wynn Dorvan = my new favorite character.
