Expansionism, Russification, Colonization and the Sowing of Ethnic Strife

Agnia Grigas, a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council in Washington DC, describes herself as an energy and political risk expert, specializing in Russia, Eastern Europe, and the post-Soviet space. This book concentrates primarily on political risk (although gas and oil have their place, especially in as much as they are exported by Russia and some other post-Soviet states), and the book’s area of interest takes in the entire area formerly occupied by the Soviet Union.

As the title suggests, Grigas’s starting point is Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March 2014. She works backwards from there to examine how Russia was in a position to so quickly and effectively take over what was, and in international law remains, the autonomous Ukrainian republic. She identifies a ‘Russian reimperialization policy trajectory’ that starts with 1) soft power and continues to 2) humanitarian policies, 3) compatriot policies, 4) information warfare, 5) passportization, 6) protection, and finally 7) annexation. Each of these is fully examined, not only with respect to Crimea but to a number of other former Soviet areas. Separate chapters consider Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine; Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania; Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan; and Belarus and Armenia.

There are of course important differences between all of these states, and their current relationship with Russia ranges from outright hostility to almost comfortable accommodation, but all are seen to have been subjected, to a greater or lesser extent, to the earlier stages at least of the reimperialization trajectory.

Crimea is so far the only territory that has been annexed, but the situation in Transnistria, South Ossetia and Abkhazia is of frozen conflict and the conflict in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine is sadly not even frozen. Grigas comments: ‘For Moscow, creating frozen conflicts and breakaway territories is a low-cost, high-return strategy that makes life difficult for its recalcitrant neighbor states and for the EU and NATO.’

Her central argument is that since the 1990s, and particularly since the 2000s, there has been an increasing tendency in Russian foreign policy toward reimperialization of the post-Soviet space. In this, she writes, the Russian Federation is in many respects following in the footsteps of its historical predecessors and will continue to do so, because of the similar ideological, cultural, security and geopolitical drivers that have been rooted in the centuries-long imperial experience of the three empires that have occupied the same Russian political space and territories – the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation.

She finds threads of historical continuity in policy between Putin’s era and those of his predecessors going back to the tsarist times of expansionism, Russification, colonization and the sowing of ethnic strife.

The book’s text appears to have been completed in mid-2015. Grigas’s analysis of the current situation with regard to the various countries is of great interest and has not so far been overtaken by events in any important respect. Grigas may be regarded as a Cold Warrior (or a new Cold Warrior), but much of her analysis is difficult to refute. My only criticism is that she pays too little attention to increasing competition for Russia from China (on similar trade, economic support and soft power lines), especially in the Central Asian States.

really confusing

I'm struggling between 2 and 3 here. The reason for the low rating is two-fold. One, I've kind of lost track of what is happening here. There is something about a pearl. One minute Greg is forcing it on her; the next he is beating her to get it back and then he's telling her to take it. I'm lost. I don't know what he actually wants from her. Plus she's supposed to choose a dragon, then seems to think she can claim one and mate one. I don't know.

Two, like the first book (but worse) it just ends. I mean it just suddenly ends. This is by no means a complete novel on it's own. Nope, not even by stretching the definition of novella does this qualify as anything complete. Irritatingly it's not a beginning of anything either, being the middle book. So on it's own it just the middle of a story. Who picks up a book and just reads the middle third? No one I know.

But why not just a one start then? Because despite my tenuous grasp of what is actually happening I am invested in how the story eventually comes to fruition. (I just hope I don't get to the end of the third one and find it's not the end of the series.) And I generally think the writing is pretty good. Pending the third book contains an ending I would strongly post my preference to see the story firmly ensconced in a single binding. There doesn't seem to be any real reason for it to be three books. It just creates frustration for the reader. Of course, my opinion is worth exactly what was paid for it. Nothing.

Unexpected Story line

The synopsis appealed to me for first book, as did price - free :) but having just finished it, i just purchased the bundle to get all 3 books-Call, Dance and Bound!!

Cora is interesting if naive witch, having chosen to disbelieve in her hereditary blood line. The back story is skimpy but may be enlarged in book 2 that I haven't read as yet. The Dragon Keepers Selin and Greg hold potential as does possibility of other books with her sister and mother as leads thereby giving us the backstory. The book had a good pace and held my interest thru to end. I felt anxious to read what happened next to Cora. [ASIN:B00811WUNA Dragon Call (Lunes & Lords]

Soothing and mellifluous, native Briton Bailey's voice proves an excellent instrument for polishing up a new edition of Burnett's story. Bratty and spoiled Mary Lennox is orphaned when her parents fall victim to a cholera outbreak in India. As a result, Mary becomes the ward of an uncle in England she has never met. As she hesitantly tries to carve a new life for herself at imposing and secluded Misselthwaite Manor, Mary befriends a high-spirited boy named Dickon and investigates a secret garden on the Manor grounds. She also discovers a sickly young cousin, Colin, who has been shut away in a hidden Manor room. Together Mary and Dickon help Colin blossom, and in the process Mary finds her identity and melts the heart of her emotionally distant uncle. Bailey makes fluid transitions between the voices and accents of various characters, from terse Mrs. Medlock and surly groundskeeper Ben to chipper housemaid Martha. And most enjoyably, she gives Mary a believably childlike voice. A brief biography of the author is included in an introduction. Ages 6-12.

The outdoor scenes are beautifully depicted, presenting realistic images of animals and flowers, with the hues gradually warming in sync with the story's progression from winter's browns and beiges to the lush colors of spring. The young protagonists—lonely Mary Lennox; her sickly and spoiled cousin, Colin; and likable local lad Dickon—bound to life in the evocative paintings, which reflect the wonders of transformations in both nature and in a child's heart. One of my favorite books

I read this a couple times when I was a young teenager and now I just read it again 10 years later. It is still one of my favorite books. I love the theme that children need activities and hobbies and exercise to stay healthy, physically and mentally. I wish I had my own secret garden inside a stone wall :)
I think this is a wonderful book for any young child to read. The characters are good and the story is so beautiful.

Children's Classic

For those of you who haven't read this, you should.

It's the story of Mary Lennox, who grew up in India, extremely spoiled by the servants, whose only job was to keep her quiet and out of the way of her parents. After her parents die she's sent to live with her uncle in England, a crotchety old man mourning the loss of his wife, who also wants nothing to do with her. Lonely, spoiled Mary explores the manor and the garden, finding all sorts of hidden secrets as well as her own happiness.

A must-read for children and adults. It's the kind of story that just makes you feel warm and comfortable inside.

One of the most wonderfully illustrated versions of the Secret Garden

I just received this glorious book. I have many renditions of the Secret Garden. This luxuriously, lovely book is filled with superb illustration that really captures the mood and era of the story, which is the early 1900's. There are so MANY illustrations, Inga Moore has created a painting for nearly every page! A really lovely addition to a collection or to share with your children. If you enjoy the artwork in this book, buy "The Wind in the Willows" also illustrated by Inga Moore .Simply wonderful!
In case you are unfamiliar with the story, it is the tale of a peevish, spoiled and sullen orphan girl, MARY LENOX, who comes to live in the home of her mysterious and emotionally distant uncle. She meets her sickly cousin, Colin, a young boy, hidden away from the world and convinced he is dying. Hidden behind a huge stone wall is a Secret Garden which is discovered by the girl,Mary; a garden as neglected and in need of care as these two children. As they bring the garden back to life, they bring themselves back to life as well, discovering joy and friendship in an enchanting and wonderful way. It really is a classic.
