About the Author
Sheila Ackerlind is Professor Emerita of Portuguese at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. She taught Romance languages for more than thirty years at various universities.
Rebecca Jones-Kellogg is Assistant Professor of Portuguese at West Point and has traveled extensively throughout Portugal, Brazil, and Lusophone Africa.

Filling a Lacuna in Portuguese Studies

There regularly appear books that seek to update the material of existing ones or perhaps provide a better approach; this one however fills a gap that had been left open far too long. It is indeed the much needed publication that fits between the usual pedagogical textbooks that stress fluency and practical knowledge and the scholarly grammars written for linguists. Filling such a gap is certainly the book's main asset, but it also has at least two others. Since it is the work of authors who have advanced training in linguistics, the material, though aimed at language learners, is presented, not in the form of grammatical injunctions, but as analyzable items governed by linguistic principles. The third asset is the contents itself: though all the variants of Portuguese are mutually intelligible, variants they are, and it is the merit of this book's authors to have included not only the geographical variants, but also those in speech style. A valuable source of information for the demanding Portuguese learner and also for scholars gleaning data in a field where there is so much to discover.

Very useful for serious students

In spite of its stupendous number of speakers, and the prominence of Brazil in many aspects of world affairs, there aren't many good grammars of Portuguese out there. This particular one has these advantages:
1) pretty thorough and pretty systematic in morphology,
2) very attentive to current orthography,
3) references Spanish a lot, useful for many English speakers of Portuguese. More systematic in this respect than "Pois nao", but less information.
Some drawbacks:
1) very limited attention to syntax,
2) limited irregular verb chart,
3) not enough attention to oddities in pronunciation (e.g. open vs closed e/o not marked, pronunciation of "vir" with nasalised "i" not indicated in verb list, etc),
4) there is some attention to differences between European and Brazilian Portuguese, but not enough.
5) There are some defensible but questionable omissions, e.g. the compound objest pronouns (i.e. forms such as "to" for "te o", "mo" for "me o" etc.); my impression is that these are falling into desuetude everywhere, but one still encounters them in European print works, e.g. Saramago.
The whole thing is rather heavy going, really a reference grammar rather than one you'd sit around reading. Sometimes it's great, e.g. the discussion of object pronouns and their relation to the corresponding Spanish usage was the clearest and most concise treatment of that subject that I'd seen. Don't confuse it with a primer, though.
If it's available, have a look at it. If you're in an academic program, demand that the locals buy it, if they haven't already.

Great Portuguese Reference

Great Portuguese language reference--This book has opened my eyes to the wonderful Portuguese language. As a native Italian speaker, I have been able to make great progress in reading, writing and spaking Portuguese. I especially like the usage of the examples of Portuguese words in various contexts. Extremely helpful.
