She dreamed of becoming a pop star. She fought her way through personal obstacles to emerge--against overwhelming odds--as an international pop sensation: Ginger Spice of the supergroup the Spice Girls. Then, at the height of her fame, Geri Halliwell walked away from it all.
If Only is the inspiring story of Halliwell's roller-coaster journey from insecure teenager to nineties' pop superstar. With wry humor and rare candor, she reveals the hunger for love and acceptance that propelled her from her working-class beginnings to fame beyond her wildest dreams.
She shares candid thoughts about her battle with bulimia...her unforgettable meeting with Prince Charles...her ongoing quest for spiritual fulfillment...the real reason she left the Spice Girls. And she takes us inside the mind and heart of the outrageously dressed performer whose public persona shouted "Girl Power!" yet who constantly strove to discover who she really was.
When she left the Spice Girls in 1998--with a string of number one hits behind her--she was ready to stop being Ginger Spice and start becoming Geri Halliwell. Today, at twenty-seven, she has already embarked on a new journey--a platinum solo album, three number one singles, and the inspirational role of Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations--rushing toward a future filled with success, fulfillment, and, hopefully, no regrets.

From Booklist
The superficiality of this book cannot be overstated. Still, it is a useful pop-cultural document. Halliwell was Ginger Spice in the Spice Girls, the Monkees-/Bay City Rollers-/Sex Pistols-style prefab band that rode a carefully crafted "girl power" media assault to fame and fortune. She treats us to page after page of growing up as the perky, undersized issue of a moderately ne'er-do-well Swedish dad from Liverpool and a feisty, Spanish, Catholic-cum-Jehovah's Witness mom. She pays special attention to her slow bust development, reports wanting to marry George Michael, and says that Lady Di's marriage and transformation into Princess Di show that fairy tales do happen. Snippets from her diary appear throughout, and though only a cynic would question whether they are genuine, they reveal the living, breathing, thinking, feeling human being behind the carefully crafted persona of Ginger Spice. It should be noted that Geri says that Ginger Spice is dead and she, Geri, has matured: "Last week in Los Angeles, I tried on a dress that was a little too tight around the bust. The old Geri would have tried to squeeze into the smaller size, but instead I chose the next size up. For me this was an important step toward self-acceptance." So, publicity ploy or soul-baring journal of a contemporary artiste? Anyone familiar with Geri's role model Madonna's legendary inability to realistically assess herself and her "art" should have no trouble answering that one. There is no denying the probable appeal of this parable in pink gauze, but the sugar sensitive should also be alerted to adequately prepare for it. Mike Tribby

IF IT WASN'T FOR BAD LUCK...
By Anglophile
I am so glad that I didn't listen to the negative reviews of this book and decided to read it, because it is truly amazing! I've often been unhappy with my life because I never really achieved all that I wanted to and its still a nagging pain to this day; but this woman's story has really been an eye-opener because she seems to to speak to ALL women regardless of stature. I have never been a Spice Girls fan, but I sort of took an interest in Victoria Beckham so I decided to read the biographies. And I must admit that I picked this one up for rather petty reasons because I felt that Victoria's was leaving a lot out, so I wanted another point of view.
Well, the joke ended up on me because I enjoyed this book tremendously and I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in Geri Halliwell. The things she's been through really gave me a sense of comfort not for her misfortune, but the fact that if it can happen to her it can happen to anyone. This poor woman actually sounds so miserable that I found myself feeling really bad for her, as I can sympathize with all that she's gone through. I also have her second book that I can't wait to read, though I hope that things are much better for her this time around. I really feel for her and I wish there was some way I could let her know just how much I enjoyed reading her book. All I can say is: hang in there, kid.

Read This Book!
By David R. Lorenz
I will be the first to admit, when I first heard "Wannabe" on the radio, I had no clue who the group was that was doing it, nor did I have any sort of active interest in them at all.
Not until I saw "Spice World, The Movie" did I fall in love with their humor, and wit, and music. Of Course, not long after I got involved with their music, and started collecting their CDs (both of them), Geri (formerly known as Ginger) left the group.
I enjoyed this book. I was able to better understand Geri as a person, and learn what prompted her to leave the group.
This book will re-think any thoughts you might have previoulsy had, and help you take Geri seriously.

Wonderful
By K. Curley
"If Only" shows the world just who lies beneath Ginger Spice; a shy, direction-less girl from the poor side of the tracks desperate to be somebody. Her recollections are at times both painful and funny, and the prose is well written. That was one of the nice things about the book - Geri wries like a person putting her thoughts to paper (not like so many others who try to cram as many 'big-sounding' words as possible to make themselves seem smarter). She comes across as an intelligent yet falliable person whose dreams of success came true, and is much the wiser for it.
I highly recommend this book (in fact I think that young girls everywhere should read it, if only to discover how damaging false self image can be). I look forward to reading the sequel "For The Record", which picks up where "If Only" leaves off.
