MATTHEW DIBIASE is a member of the Society for International Hockey Research and works for the National Archives-Mid Atlantic Region located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he handles reference requests from businesses, politicians, foreign citizens and special interest groups. He holds a M.A. in American History from Rutgers-Camden University and earned his journalistic chops at writing for his college newspaper. Matthew DiBiase has published numerous op-ed pieces with local newspapers in the South Jersey area and is a regular columnist at Inside Hockey Magazine, where his analyses, retrospectives, and think-pieces about the NHL can be read throughout the regular hockey season.

Bench Bosses: a really good read!

Bench Bosses is a great book for hockey fans! It s packed with detail on 50 of the best coaches in the history of the NHL. And it is up to date as of the summer of 2015. Matt DiBiase's research and analysis on each coach makes this book a rare find and a great gift for any hockey fan. I so enjoyed this book that I took it with me on a business trip to Mexico City so I could finish reading it. I will definitely read it again.

Outstanding book on outstanding hockey coaches

Most sports books that are lists of the best or worst of something usually follow a tried and true format – countdown to the top spot, a brief biography or recap of the team or player and an explanation why the team or player is ranked at that spot.

Take that format and throw it out the window when picking up this book on the best coaches in the history of professional hockey. Hockey historian Matthew Dibiase devised a format that takes both positive and negative accomplishments by hockey coaches and ranked the best coaches from 1 to 50, with a few extra “honorable mention” coaches.

His methodology is simple in one respect – positive accomplishments such as playoff appearances and Stanley Cup wins are worth one point each while negative accomplishments such as a losing season or missing the playoffs lose one point each. Then a few tweaks to allow for items such as different requirements for these accomplishments through different eras and it makes for one of the best books about any sport for comparing eras.

Hockey fans and historians will appreciate the write ups for each coach, especially those about coaches from the early days of the sport like Pete Green, Art Ross, Frank and Lester Patrick and Ralph “Cooney” Weiland. Even if the reader has not heard of some of these coaches from many years ago, he or she will appreciate what that coach has meant to the game and what he accomplished after reading that coach’s passage.

Another reason that I believe that this is one of the best books about who is the best at what he does is that Dibiase includes accomplishments in other professional leagues – the Pacific Coast Hockey League and Western Canada Hockey League/Western Hockey League from the early 20th century and the World Hockey Association from the 1970’s. By including a coach’s accomplishments in these leagues as well, Dibiase gives a complete picture of what the coach achieved without shortchanging him because he coached in a different professional league.
Finally, the book doesn’t stop at just ranking these coaches. There are chapters describing who was the best coach in each decade, which coaches often came close to making the Stanley Cup finals but never made it, rivalries and separate short chapters on each of the aforementioned other professional leagues. That gives the book even more credibility as a complete comparison of these coaches over the history of professional hockey.

The book can be read for pleasure or can be used for reference as well. It is an outstanding record of the best coaches the game has known and should be on the bookshelf of every hockey fan and historian.

I can say Matthew's book Bench Bosses: The NHL's Coaching Elite is one of the best books I have read that provides an excellent history of NHL / WHA coaches. This is done using an objective analysis of a data set that ranks the coaches (for the analytic geeks like me ) and also using direct access interviews with many of the coaches (for the hockey historian like me). AS a member of SIHR and a reader of close to 25 books a year, I rank this one a+ and a must read.

Paul Coelho is one BEST writer ever!

For so many years, I have been longed for such good novels based on writer's own experiences.
I happened to come across this super fantastic book "The Alchemist", at my local health store,
it just stood out on a shelf looking at me. I ended up buying all of his books!
It is a must to read this wonderful book.

Great collection of submissions from well known authors. Loved the photo of Mohamed Nazmy in his Armani suit. He owns Quest Travel in Egypt and is truly one of the kindest and most generous beings on the planet and made my trip to Egypt a highlight of my life. You will enjoy this book very much.

Italy chose the winning side in the First World War, but the enormous costs of victory revealed social tensions and constitutional weaknesses that prepared the way, after 1920, for Europe's first fascist dictatorship.
After the painful civil war that followed World War II, Italy rediscovered liberal democracy, and under a new republican regime became one of the major industrialized countries of the world.
First published in 1958 as Italy: A Modern History, the book has been substantially rewritten with a new section on the period after 1945, a new bibliography, new maps, and updated factual appendices. Stylish, clearly written, deeply informed and often controversial, it remains the definitive account for anyone interested in modern Italy.

A magisterial study that will continue to be the benchmark for political histories of modern Italy. Mack Smith (Oxford Univ.) is considered the foremost historian of modern Italy in the English-speaking world, the author of biographies on Mussolini, Garibaldi, Mazzini and Victor Emanuele, and Cavour. Mack Smith has also written on Italy's unification and its monarchy. First published in 1959, the present work is fully updated (to 1996) and has been substantially rewritten. It is the most comprehensive and accessible study we have of modern Italy. The author is partial to the liberal-conservative tradition, but this in no way prevents him from criticizing the many faults of liberal Italy as it developed after unification: Social and economic problems were exacerbated rather than solved (or even addressed); the virus of nationalism and the myth of a Roman empire were carelessly and recklessly promulgated; and perhaps most dangerous of all, the political elite failed to forge a true civic culture after centuries of foreign and domestic despotism. The recent corruption scandals that have rocked the country and destroyed the old political order had their roots in the immediate postwar period, while we now know that the threat of terrorism was much graver from the shadowy Right than from the more dramatic Left. A very thorough review of Italian politics since unification

In this book, I got exactly what I wanted: an understanding of the actors, events, and movements in Italian political history starting with unification in the mid-19th century. Cavour, Mazzini, Garibaldi, Crispi, Giolitti, Mussolini, De Gasperi. The author does a wonderful job of constructing these characters (and others) while conveying the changing political and societal backdrop in which they labored. A lack of tempocentrism and equal emphasis on the earlier periods were very positive in my view. Detailed explanations of the causes, mechanisms, and failures of Mussolini and fascism were especially well done.

I wanted a background on the history of the Italian Republic of which I knew nothing about. This book fills in the blanks very well without getting too detailed.

unfortunately this attempt pales in comparison and is not a text I would recommend the true seeker or student of Italian history

Although touted by the british as the expert on modern Italian history Mack Smith is virtually laughed at in Italy amongst academics, his lack of research in anything other than works written in English and his penchant for re interpreting many events to his own likeing spoil the subject.

Study Italian and other texts written on the subject in german or French and you will gain much much clearer and more accurate insights into modern Italian History, unfortunately this attempt pales in comparison and is not a text I would recommend the true seeker or student of Italian history, rather disappointing and assumes an air of superiority throughout the narration that is simply distasteful.
