"My Being, an Invisible Mote of Dust" (Meri Zaat Zarra-e-Benishan) is one of the stories which helped Umera Ahmed cement her reputation as an emerging writer with bright future. When Saba is accussed of zina, she is counting on her husband to protect and believe her. But when her mother in law lies in the name of Quran and takes a false oath on Quran, Saba is stunned into silence. The only thing she had ever believed in was being used against her, to shame her, to force her husband to divorce her. And when he finally does, Saba surrenders her will to God. It is a story about one woman's complete faith in what Allah has chosen for her, and her total acceptance of it. In this story we see how one person can exceed every boundary to get back at someone they hate. Amma's hatred of Saba ruins many lives, including her own son's happiness and her own conscious.

Got 90 Days? Then You Can Be a Novelist

Many famous authors write their novels in a matter of weeks. William Faulkner wrote As I Lay Dying in six weeks. Joyce Carol Oates often cranks out two or three books a year. Stephen King believes first drafts should take no more than three months to complete. So, what's the trick? Novel writing isn't about inspiration. It's about the time, energy, and discipline to see the project to its finish.

With The 90-Day Novel at your side, now is the time. This inspiring guide will be your push, your deadline, and your spark to finally, without excuses, and in three short months, nail that first draft of your novel.

The difference between wanna-be writers and real writers is the difference between talk and work. If you commit to the schedule and the techniques within The 90-Day Novel and invest two to three hours a day for twelve weeks, you will complete your book. An outline will appear. Characters will take shape. A plot will emerge. Scenes will come together and form a story worth reading. And then the talking can begin!

This helpful guide provides:

  • Instruction that distills the elements of the novel—from crafting your outline to developing intriguing characters and believable plots
  • Strategies for gaining support from your family and friends
  • Motivating insights about writing and writers to minimize your inevitable moments of doubt
  • A schedule to keep you in the writing zone and keep you focused, creative, and working
Whether you're writing your first novel or your third, this guide provides the coaching, the planning, and the writerly commiseration to help get your book written.

Basic primer for 1st-time novelists
By Amazon Customer
This book is really a primer workbook for someone who's never attempted a novel before and wants to - in 90 days - learn about writing them.

The first several exercises have you doing basic internal explorations by writing descriptions of people you know and memories you've had. Another has you create 10 characters, which may (or may not) have a place in your novel. Make a list of 20 opening lines. Depending on where you are with your novel, these activities may or may not have value.

After the brainstorming, you'll create an outline. If your process doesn't play well with outlines, her advice is "Get over it." Later, much of the book has you write a scene one way, analyze it, and then in many "lessons," rewrite it another way.

As a teaching tool, that probably works. For me, though, when writing for publication, this kind of analysis and revision come too soon in the writing process. It takes too much time from the act of just getting everything down first, so I can see how all my scenes work together, versus crafting some of them individually this way.

If you're looking for a prescriptive process that's less instructive on basics, I'd recommend James V. Smith's "You Can Write a Novel" or Robert Ray's "The Weekend Novelist" (1st edition), or even "A Book in a Month" by Victoria Lynn Schmidt.

On a side note, the author has quite a lot of experience as a literary short story writer and editor, but I couldn't find any published novels. At the risk of sounding unfair, I tend to prefer instruction from writers who do have the added experience of publishing a finished novel. To me it brings an "I've been there" nuance to their advice that I find inspiring.

In the end, though, whether this book succeeds for you or not depends very much on the kind of writer you are. It just wasn't for me.

Foundational novel writing tips (by someone who's never written a novel)
By George E.
I would imagine that most everybody at one point or another fantasizes about writing a book. A quick search on Amazon turns up a myriad of self-help books aimed at satiating this urge: Books with titles such as “The 90-Day Novel,” “Book in a Month: The Fool-Proof System for Writing a Novel in 30 Days,” “Your Novel, Day by Day,” “Your First Novel,” and “90 Days to Your Novel.”

Apparently we not only want to write a book, but we also want to write it fast.

But do any of these primers actually work? Can we all become novelists because we read a book about writing a novel?

I decided to find out. I’ll admit, I had an ulterior motive. That’s right, I wanted to write a novel. After doing a fair bit of research, and reading the feedback that users were leaving for each title, I settled on Sarah Domet’s “90 Days to Your Novel.” This book purports to assist the first-time would-be novelist to complete a working first draft in a mere three months. Does this seem like a tall order? Yes, and Ms Domet makes no excuses for her up-front promise that you can expect to spend two or more hours per day writing in order to meet that goal. In fairness, there were some days, especially in the beginning, that I did not spend nearly this long.

First, a little background on the author. While she has published many short stories and nonfiction pieces in a variety of journals, as far as I can tell, she has never actually published a novel. Her blog site appears to not have been updated since March 2011. This is questionable. You may be asking yourself at this point if she has any information worth sharing with the would-be novelist.

The answer is: kind of, sort of.

The strength of this book, I would argue, is the tangible and structured way that Ms Domet goes about the process of having her reader organize his project. The book is broken up into sections in which you are always aware of where you are in your journey. For the first 21 days, you have daily assignments to complete, from coming up with character bios, to brainstorming plot ideas, to writing sample scenes to help you come up with ideas. The author is a huge fan of beginning with an outline for your novel, and throughout these first 21 days, you are constructing this outline and refining it.

Starting with Week 4, (Day 22), you no longer have daily assignments. Now you switch to weekly assignments. Each week will contain between three and four assignments in which you continue tweaking your outline but also start writing the content. The premise of the book is that by the end Week 13, you have a solid first draft.

Now, let me clarify that the title of the book is a bit misleading. This is, after all, a first draft you are holding at this point, not a finished novel. You now have to begin the painstaking process of revising your work, cutting things that don’t work, adding things that are missing, polishing for flow, etc. Many accomplished writers will tell you that the revision process can be gut-wrenching and tedious. But this is what you must do in order to take that first draft and turn it into a polished novel.

So the question remains: Is Sarah Domet’s technique effective?

I can only offer my own experience on the matter. For a while, I thought I was really on to something as I completed assignments and churned out pages and pages of scenes that I thought for sure would end up in my finished novel.

Unfortunately, that is not what happened.

I will give Ms Domet credit as a published author who knows a thing or two about the writing process itself. But had I realized up front that she had never actually published a novel, I would have looked somewhere else.

My biggest complaint is that Ms Domet focuses way too much on issues that are external to the story itself; One example of this is what she calls “scene balance”. She seems to think that the author needs to carefully balance the number of external and internal scenes in the novel so that they are about equal. She defines an external scene as any scene where there is action going on, where a character is physically interacting with the world around him. An internal scene, then, by contrast, is a scene in which most of what is going on is happening in the character’s head. The character may be thinking, reflecting, having an internal monologue, etc.

I would say that we should let the story dictate the scenes that need to be included. Ms Domet wants her reader to use his outline and figure out how many external scenes and how many internal scenes are on it, and cut/revise to balance it out, long before her reader has even started writing the story. There is an old saying that goes something like “if you need to force it to make it fit, you’re probably doing it wrong.”

This has never been so true as it is here.

Another major shortcoming of this book comes when you begin working on Act II of your first draft. For those of you who do not know, Act II is the middle act of the familiar three act structure commonly used in storytelling. It is where most of your action takes place, and typically accounts for at least fifty percent of the word count of your book. At this point, Ms Domet asks you to do something that I find odd: She has you look at your outline, sort the scenes according to scene type, and then write all the scenes for that type before moving on to the next type.

In other words, she wants you to write all of your action scenes together. She wants you to write all of your dialogue scenes together. She wants you to write all of your introspective scenes together. Etcetera. Etcetera.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Filmmakers do this all the time. If you are making a movie, and every day you spend filming adds to your production costs, and you have three scenes that all take place at the same location, you film those three scenes all in a row. You let the editor put the scenes in order later, during postproduction. I know a thing or two about this process, as I have two film festival awards at home.

But in novel writing, this just seems silly. There is no compelling reason that I can think of to write your novel out of order, other than maybe you got into the zone for action scenes and so you just kept writing action scenes.

But what is the trade-off?

For starters, you lose the flow of your narrative. The novelist needs to be able to feel how his work is progressing, if the pace is too slow and needs to be sped up, or if the pace is too fast and needs to be slowed down. Often, a high-octane, edge-of-your-seat action scene needs to be followed by a slower scene, to allow the reader to catch his breath. Too many slow scenes in a row can make the book get stale. Too many fast scenes can detract from the substance of the story. But how are you supposed to get a feel for the flow of your work if you are writing the scenes out of order?

And what about continuity? In novels, scenes build on the scenes that come before. A later scene is influenced by an earlier scene. Something that has already happened will be brought up again later in the book. There is a natural flow to it. How can you have that if you wrote all the scenes out of order? You could argue that you can add these little nuances in later, but that sounds like extra work. I would just as soon get it right the first time through, and save my revision time for fixing bad writing rather than correcting continuity errors that were introduced by writing my scenes out of order.

I will admit that this is the point in the book in which I became very suspicious of what I had gotten myself into.

Of course, these are just my experiences. Someone else may feel that they benefitted from writing their novel following this schedule.

Let me just say I decided to stop following Ms Domet’s book. I finished reading it for any little insights she might have had for me. For instance, she offers lots of great coaching and solid tips on crafting plot and characters, things that she obviously knows about from her publishing experience. But I stopped using her book as a guideline for writing my novel.

In fact, I threw out almost everything I did when following this book, and started more or less from scratch. My completed urban fantasy novel, titled "Line of Sight: A Jake Presnall Novel" bears little resemblance to what I was working on when I was reading “90 Days to Your Novel.”

And so, my advice to the aspiring novelist out there, is put the story first. The story must come before all else. It must come before artificially and externally imposed restrictions like balancing out external and internal scenes. If you want to read any self-help books on writing, there are great ones out there. But focus on reading the books that walk you through the process of improving the actual substance of your writing. Check out Othello Bach’s “How to Write a Great Story: A Fiction Writer’s Handbook.” Or check out James Scott Bell’s “Plot & Structure: Techniques And Exercises For Crafting A Plot That Grips Readers From Start To Finish.” Another favorite of mine is “Writing the Breakout Novel” by Donald Maass.

The difference between these books and the book that I have just critiqued is simple. Rather than walking you through the novel writing process, they simply attempt to explain to you how to write a story that your reader will love to read. “How to Write a Great Story” gives excellent advice on improving the actual content of your writing, maturing you as a writer. “Plot & Structure” is a fascinating look at why some plots seem to work better than others, and gives practical and insightful tips on how to come up with your own plot ideas. “Writing the Breakout Novel” is written by a literary agent who wants you to know what other literary agents are looking for when they are trying to decide if your novel has the potential to become a “breakout novel.”

Thank you for reading. And good luck to you.

Excellent left-brain strategies to activate the right brain!
By Kelcey Parker
I love how this book provides the schedule and structure for writing a novel, thus freeing you up to activate your right brain and immerse yourself in your characters, scenes, and themes. But there's way more here than a stream of smart and timely assignments to keep you on track. Domet breaks down each assignment with examples from novels like The Great Gatsby, Lolita, My Antonia, Nobody's Fool, To Kill a Mockingbird, Housekeeping, and The Handmaid's Tale - and peppers each section with quotes from writers like Mark Twain, Joyce Carol Oates, and Dickens. AND there are excellent mini-lessons on key aspects of craft as well as keen reflections on the psychological demands of committing to 90 days of writing. I teach creative writing at the college level and am considering using this book in an upcoming semester, which, conveniently, lasts about 90 days.

90 Days to Your Novel is a truly comprehensive guide that takes you on an intense writing journey, offering encouragement, tough love, and great tips along the way.

Review
Praise for Gabrielle Roy:
“A consummate artist … Roy communicates masterfully, with a beauty that is quite indescribable.”
— Toronto Star

“Only a few modern writers … could match [Roy's] gift of portraying warmth without sentimentality, joy without delusion. Even when her work described alienation and loneliness, it also reached out in hope.”

From the Inside Flap
The Tin Flute, Gabrielle Roy?s first novel, is a classic of Canadian fiction. Imbued with Roy?s unique brand of compassion and compelling understanding, this moving story focuses on a family in the Saint-Henri slums of Montreal, its struggles to overcome poverty and ignorance, and its search for love.

An affecting story of familial tenderness, sacrifice, and survival during the Second World War, The Tin Flute won both the Governor General?s Award and the Prix Fémina of France. The novel was made into a critically acclaimed motion picture in 1983.

About the Author
Gabrielle Roy was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba, in 1909. Her parents were part of the large Quebec emigration to western Canada in the late nineteenth century. The youngest of eight children, she studied in a convent school for twelve years, then taught school herself, first in isolated Manitoba villages and later in St. Boniface.

In 1937 Roy travelled to Europe to study drama, and during two years spent in London and Paris she began her writing career. The approaching war forced her to return to Canada, and she settled in Montreal.

Roy’s first novel, The Tin Flute, ushered in a new era of realism in Quebec fiction with its compassionate depiction of a working-class family in Montreal’s Saint-Henri district. Her later fiction often turned for its inspiration to the Manitoba of her childhood and her teaching career.

In 1947 Roy married Dr. Marcel Carbotte, and after a few years in France, they settled in Quebec City, which was to remain their home. Roy complemented her fiction with essays, reflective recollections, and three children’s books. Her many honours include three Governor General’s Awards, France’s Prix Fémina, and Quebec’s Prix David.

Gabrielle Roy died in Quebec City, Quebec, in 1983.

The Tin Flute
By Isabela
Shortly after it was published, The Tin Flute surprised Canadian readers and was soon widely read and enjoyed internationally. Its author, Gabrielle Roy, reached out to an audience with eloquent, flowing prose, by describing the very depth of the human condition through the Lacasse family.
Briefly: the main character of the novel is the oldest Lacasse child, Florentine. Her poor family, residing in the slums of Saint Henri, Montreal, rely heavily on the wages she brings in as a waitress. Rose-Anna, her mother, struggles to care for her growing family and struggle through tragedy, while the father, Azarius, is unable to maintain a job. Florentine's life is turned upside down when she meets a handsome man named Jean, an affair that is doomed from the beginning. A crushed Florentine turns to Jean's friend, Emmanuel, for his love, although she cannot return it, as she is still torn over her feelings for Jean. In the original French, it was entitled, "Bonheure d'occasion" which cannot be perfectly translated. However, the English title of "The Tin Flute" is very suitable and expresses the message of the novel from the smallest Lacasse child, Daniel -- his only great desire was to have a shiny tin flute, a symbol of all that he would never be able to call his own, in a poverty-stricken existence.
With this groundwork, Roy paints a convincing and enthralling portrait of an impoverished family, troubled love, and mixed ideals in the midst of World War II. It is a novel well worth reading and will leave you with new insight into the human condition and the brutality of poverty. Although some phrases are lost in the translation to English from the original French, the translation is highly successful in being as nearly as effective as the original.
For related themes (although from very different perspectives & times) you may also wish to explore Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt, and Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens.

one of the best books I've ever read
By A Customer
If only more books were written like this! The Tin Flute is the poignant story of a young girl growing up in poverty in the slums of Montreal. It is the 1940's, war is brooding. And we are introduced to a French Canadian family faced with unemployment, too many children, and despair. We suffer as the mother, pregnant again, searches on foot for affordable housing. Her daughter works at the five-and-dime and is inlove with a man who holds contempt for her class and social background.
I have read this story three times. It is without a doubt, one the greatest books ever written of its genre. If you enjoyed "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" or "Angela's Ashes" you will no doubt love this story equally well. It is unforgettable.

canadian classic
By lisatheratgirl
It's really too bad that Canadian authors aren't publicized more in the U.S. I bought this book from amazon-canada because I wouldnt have known what to look for. It's won several literary prizes in Canada and is well deserving of them. The story of a French-Canadian family during the depression and early years of WWII in Montreal, it portrays a world that no longer exists. In this country, the people would have been Tom Brokaw's Greatest Generation. The differences between then and now were phenomenal. Men joined the Army to put food on the table. They looked everywhere for honest work, even part time or temporary or low-paying. They didn't join gangs or deal drugs. People weren't afraid of each other, even in the worst neighborhoods. Yet their lives were unbelievably hard. There was high infant mortality. A child with leukemia was doomed. Landlords put whole families out in the street when they got behind with the rent, often due to unemployment. The war ended the depression, but some of the characters ask themselves if it's worth the price, or if peace as they knew it was any better. The author wrote this book at the time it took place, in a city she knew. It could have easily been set in Detroit or Chicago, London or Dublin. There is a universal quality to this story, that gives a vivid picture of the times. The book isn't cheerful, but it's also not hopeless. At the end you don't know what will happen to these people, but they have a chance. A really moving story.
