About the Author
Chris Freiler teaches Advanced Placement European History and Philosophy at Hinsdale Central High School in Hinsdale, IL, where he has been for over 20 years. Janet’s passion and determination to make a difference for disadvantaged children shines through in Joyful Literacy Interventions. Her book is based on the most recent literacy research such as the NELP (National Early Literacy Panel, 2008) report, which is a meta-analysis of 500 exemplary literacy studies conducted in the last decade. This compelling research highlights the factors that have the most lasting effect on future reading success if implemented in the early years. Alphabetic principles, phonological awareness, shared reading and shared writing, rapid automatized naming, and use of children’s names as a key instructional strategy are featured prominently. In Joyful Literacy Interventions Janet has merged the recommendations of the NELP Report with her 40 years of experiences as a primary teacher and administrator; her recent PhD in Language, Literacy and Early Learning and the experiences of 200 classroom sites where her approach was field-tested. She has designed a unique assessment and tracking system that facilitates skill development and differentiated instruction in the midst of a playful and inquiry-based learning center classroom. It elegantly provides the teacher with detailed data to inform daily instruction for small “like-need” groups. Vulnerable children get the “catch-up” instruction they require while feeling safe and happy. Janet describes how to joyfully implement play and the essential literacy skills so that vulnerable children will thrive in classroom-based interventions. The book weaves nine essential research-based components into practical classroom applications. Each chapter describes essential skills, concepts and experiences needed for literacy success for all children. Implemented together the result is a holistic classroom experience that promises literacy success for many disadvantaged children. The first seven chapters provide the reader with: Janet’s wisdom that evolved over 40 years in her experiences as teacher, principal, superintendent and professor; a synopsis of the latest, persuasive research; key references to other popular authors; teacher implementation stories from Janet’s pilot sites; hundreds of practical ideas for the reader to implement; and colored photos throughout the book that illustrate possibilities and results. The chapters' topics address: a dynamic classroom environment; assessment and tracking; the essential literacy skills; learning center design; word recognition; shared reading and writing; and involving families in practice literacy activities at home. Chapter 8 provides a checklist that describes the ideal classroom by listing the research-based criteria and observable indicators in a classroom when full implementation is achieved. Chapter 9 describes a district and a classroom case study from Janet’s 200 pilot sites. Janet N. Mort PhD Janet’s 2014 book Joyful Literacy Interventions is based on recent compelling research, a lifetime of experience with innovations that work. Her book describes a new classroom implementation method for ensuring that over 90% of primary children are reading at grade level by the end of grade 3. Who is Janet and what are her credentials? Janet has a doctoral degree in Language and Literacy (Early Learning) from the University of Victoria (2005). She is an award-winning primary teacher, principal, superintendent and university professor. She retired to university to study why up to 40% of the school population has consistently not achieved success in school over the past 30 years; little progress has been made, especially for vulnerable readers who need experiential gaps in literacy closed by the end of grade three. Janet has developed an early intervention literacy approach that promises, and is proving in over 200 pilot sites, to provide more than 90% literacy success by the end of grade three regardless of poverty issues, ethnicity, and previous literacy experience. In preparation for this work she collaborated with Dr. Clyde Hertzman of the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) at the University of British Columbia, where she participated in a research program focused on thousands of vulnerable children; her challenge was to analyze the differences in school programs where vulnerable children experienced greater success than classrooms without the same treatment. Based on 35 years in the school system, PhD studies, and school-based research Janet developed and piloted her intervention theories in over 200 pilot classrooms with high vulnerability rates in several school districts in k-2 classrooms with significant results using several measures including pre- and post-testing. In addition, in the past two years Janet has organized eight national Summits called When Vulnerable Children Thrive: Dreams Come True for over 3000 administrators and teachers. The Summits feature North American researchers and authors who typically present at the IRA (International Reading Association): Janet collaborates with these experts whose work is also quoted in her book. A Clear and Compelling Book that Links Research on Vulnerable Readers with Play-Based Approaches for Mastering Critical Skills

This is a book that will be very well received by teachers, principals and school district personnel alike. In clear, understandable prose, Dr. Mort provides a compelling argument of what should be taught in the early years to address the needs of vulnerable readers. Coming from a research base, the book makes a strong case of what should be done to ensure over 90% of all children will read at grade level by the end of the primary years. The research foundation for the book is clear and unequivocal – play is not enough. However, the author never deviates from the approach that should be taken when teaching children. By use of practical examples and beautiful colour photographs, we see that learning must be a joyful experience and fun. As educators and parents, we are left with no doubt as to what we must strive for when educating young children. This book will be a powerful catalyst for change, and an affirmation of best practices backed by solid research.

About the Author

Douglas J. Davies is Professor in the Study of Religion at Durham and Director of the Centre for Death and Life Studies. He trained in both anthropology and theology and has taught the study of religion for many years both at Nottingham and Durham Universities. His specialist interests and many publications include work on death, funerary ritual and afterlife beliefs, as well as the Mormon and Anglican religious traditions and theoretical questions of the links between anthropology and theology, with a special interest in how the human desire for meaning becomes a sense of salvation.

'Ah, what a lovely little book. My list of classics include: K&R, Pike and Kernighan's The Practice of Programming, their The Unix Programming Environment, The Perl Cookbook and The Awk Programming Language. To that list I can now add the current volume. What more can I say: this is a good buy, especially for anyone approaching Unix/Linux for the first time. Even older hands might find it useful to have a copy, if only to give away. It won't provide all that is needed but it is good starting point. I am convinced that computers are getting uglier by the day. This ugliness stems from a quest for glitz at the expense of simplicity and elegance. an excellent handy reference for LEARNERS

I made a mistake buying this book. It may not be apparent from the cover graphics that the name of this book is 'Learning the (in smaller print) UNIX Operating System' and not just 'Unix operating System' - which I was looking for.

When the book arrived I was disappointed by the small size of the book, nobody told me the book is so thin, and then taking a closer look at the title made it clear. I browsed thru it anyway and I almost bit my nails thinking why did somebody not write this book while I had my first encounter with Unix! This book would have made it so much easier.

This book is not for me, I was looking for more advanced system admin concepts, but after all these I had to give this book a good rating! The book is very well written, very organized and almost completely free of flab (except for why Unix is better for sight and hearing impaired users! Who needs to know that anyway?)

Final word - if you just got an Unix account or are about to get one, get this book, it's worth the money. Please note that it's better to be used as a practical guide and reference rather than as a book that covers the theory behind Unix.

Great First Step

If you are a DOS/Windows user and are curious about Unix you won't find a better book than this to get your feet on solid ground. The book is well written, laid out and full of tips any user will appreciate.You will be pleased to find that Unix doesn't force you to choose between Unix and Windows, as any PC can be home to both operating systems at the same time. Unix also has a number of graphical environments available to the user,with XWindow being the most popular. The book doesn't cover windows in great detail, but does show the reader how to fire one up from the command line and create additional windows. Unix windows are in most ways stand alone objects that can have a separate program running inside of each window.On a quick check of the net, I found Unix and hundreds of programs that will run on Unix. The range of the programs available varied from text editors, games, C++ compilers, database programs, Java, web servers, you name it! Most of the programs are free, but distributed on CDROM at a modest charge. If you wonder why you might want to learn Unix, I would say it's because you will enjoy an operating system purposely designed to fully support multi-user, multitasking, and multithreaded operation right out of the box. Another benefit of Unix is a concept called a name pipe that permits passing the output of one program to the input of another program. You will really be surprised at how powerful a script the end user can create with a pipe. For example you can type input from the keyboard to a file, search the file for a string, then E-mail the result of your search to someone else with only one line of code! This book is of course, only an introduction to this rich, complex computing environment that will no doubt take years to learn, but it's a great first step!

About the Author
Magnus Rueping is Professor of Organic Chemistry at RWTH Aachen University, Germany. He studied at the Technical University of Berlin, Trinity College Dublin, and ETH Zürich, where he completed his diploma thesis under the direction of Prof. D. Seebach. He stayed in the Seebach group and obtained his Ph.D. from the ETH in 2002. He then moved to Harvard University to work with Prof. D. Evans on enantioselective transition-metal catalysis. In August 2004, he was directly appointed to a C3-professorship, the Degussa Endowed Professorship of Synthetic Organic Chemistry at Goethe University Frankfurt. In 2008 he accepted a Chair and Full Professorship of Organic Chemistry at RWTH Aachen University. His group's current research interests include enantioselective organocatalysis, metal- and biocatalysis, new reaction methodology and technology, new materials as well as photochemistry and flow chemistry.

Dixit Parmar is an Alexander von Humboldt fellow at RWTH Aachen University, Germany. He obtained his MChem degree in Chemistry with first class honours from the University of Manchester, UK, in 2008. He stayed there further to conduct his Ph.D. with Prof. D. Procter on the development of reductive lactone cyclization cascades mediated by SmI2-H2O. In 2012, he moved to RWTH Aachen University as a postdoctoral researcher in the group of Prof. M. Rueping. His research interests include organocatalysis and asymmetric fluoro-cyclizations. He has received the prestigious Reaxys PhD Prize in 2011.

Erli Sugiono is a senior scientist at RWTH Aachen University, Germany. She graduated from the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany, and obtained her Ph.D. in the research group of Prof. H. Meier. She then joined the Max-Planck-Institute of Polymer Research (Mainz) as a postdoctoral fellow in the group of Prof. Dr. H.W. Spiess. She joined the group of Prof. M. Rueping in 2005 and was appointed to the position of senior scientist in 2009. Her work centers on the development of new methodologies for asymmetric catalytic transformations, catalytic flow reactions and the synthesis of biologically active compounds.

I wish to reach even more alien/milab abductees and the human populace through "Ever After the Story Continues. Written in diary form contains not only my memories of abductions with these universal entities, and military rogue governments. Contracts that were signed by both entities (alien species and humans) within each sector of governments, world-wide, on planet earth. Ever After The Story Continues describes who I feel took my husband in death. You will live along with me as you read further abduction experiences devised by the many universal entities and military rogue government and how they left me feeling powerless and leading a fearful life. The reader will read how even change in my new life led me into a different road of life of investigations into the 1947 Roswell, NM Crash and who was discovered to validate this known truth that occurred in Roswell. I was invited to join two well known researchers/investigators in this research. I have also brought forth into this new book my investigations of a few of my clients who underwent hypnotherapy as I guided them. Showing the reader the vastness of affects of this abduction phenomen. I cannot say enjoy and have fun with these two books but learn as you read the final version of my diary "Morning Glory" Ever After The Story Continues.

It is the perfect follow-up for her first book

Gloria's second book is even more riveting than her first. She has outdone herself with this new book. She takes her own experiences to a step further. They are embellished with more evidence from other's personal experiences, so compelling you won't be able of put it down.
It is the perfect follow-up for her first book, showing how she has expanded her knowledge of universal beings. This book shows her complete understanding of the phenomenon of extraterrestrials.
As you read of Gloria's and others' abductions you will be captivated by these real life accounts. She chronicles how her life and the lives of others have changed due to the experiments of the invasion of aliens.
The first book touched on a single person's horrifying experiences, but this second book delves into other abductees ghastly experiences. The dark side of the phenomenon is even more underscored thru the knowledge she has acquired through her research.
The second book is more informative and exhilarating. It shows the dark side thru the eyes of those who have witnessed the reality and substantiates the truth of government and alien collaboration.
Gloria is special. Her truthfulness, honesty and openness will stun believers and nonbelievers alike. You will learn how reptilians, grays and other forms of aliens, with the help of our own military, invade and change the lives of innocent abductees.

There is so much emotional information in each page that it is difficult to read it fast.
I find it is best to read each event and then put the book down for a few hours or a day.
I am amazed that Gloria had to go through all of this.
My wife and I got to know Gloria Hawker while we lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico 2008-2012.
I read her first book shortly after we moved there and then got to know her and many of her friends.
Now reading her second book all these years later, is bringing me back in touch with the reality that she went through.
Gloria is the real deal, gentle and sincere.
