About the Author
Katherine Ackley taught in the English Department at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point from 1979 to 2002 and also served as coordinator of the Women's Studies Program for 10 years and assistant dean of Graduate Studies for five years. Her research interests center on women in literature, with emphasis on literary representations of women's issues and, more recently, British crime writers. Her books include THE NOVELS OF BARBARA PYM (1989), WOMEN AND VIOLENCE IN LITERATURE: AN ESSAY COLLECTION (1990), MISOGYNY IN LITERATURE: AN ESSAY COLLECTION (1992), and ESSAYS FROM CONTEMPORARY CULTURE (2004, 5th Edition). The author of dozens of published articles, she received more than 20 grants for research and development and was the first woman to receive the UWSP University Scholar Award. Dr. Ackley earned a master's degree in English from Purdue University and a Ph.D. in English from Ball State University.

Needs an edit

I first started reading Royal Pain on watt pad. I really enjoyed the first few chapters that you could read for free before you had to buy it. So I decided to buy the book. Whenever I saw it was 9$ I assumed it would be highly edited but it wasn't. I also assumed it would be a fantastic book for 9$. Most books I buy for my ereaders are normally no more than 5$, so I was extremely surprised at the low quality of the book. It could use an edit, honestly. The plot for Royal Pain is really original and I genuinely loved that about it. That's what drew me in to begin with. Royal Pain is decent but could be phenomenal if it was edited. I wouldn't pay 9$ for this book if I knew the quality before hand. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends if it was edited. But in this state. No. But like I said before, it has amazing potential. I hate being critical of a book but all the reviews are great for this book, and that made me angry. If there had been critical reviews on this book, I probably still would have bought the book but I would have went in knowing what I was buying. Instead Royal Pain was boosted up and I thought it was gonna rock my world. It sadly did not. I hope this review helps all the people who plan on buying this.

Once you start, you won't be able to stop

This book is beyond amazing. The story line is like no other, and you will never guess what happens next.
You will be biting your nails, sitting on the edge of your seat in anticipation, chapter after captivating chapter.
You will laugh, get angry and you WILL shed tears....
Don't say you have not been warned!

This is a great story and the characters are very well written. I have read this book at least five times and never tire of it. There are so many surprises, twists and turns that you want to rush through the pages to get to the next chapter. This is no Twilight (thank god) it is a novel that everyone can enjoy!

This is much more than just building an electron tube amplifier from a schematic made from the design from someone else: not only academic theory for scientific evidence, but also a theoretical explanation of how the practice works. No modern simulations, but because you first understand the circuit calculations, then you can work with your hands to build the circuit and last, but not least, if you have a multimeter, a signal generator and an oscilloscope, you can measure the circuit parameters yourself to see that theory and practice are very close.

Lots of ink, not much info

This book is huge. In terms of page area it is 10% larger than the Radio Designer's Handbook 4th edition, and yet, amazingly, it covers very little ground indeed. The material included is no more than basic-to-intermediate in level. You can get much, much more info from Morgan Jones and Menno Van der Veen's books, even though they are smaller and cheaper.

To give an idea of what is covered, it is probably more eye-opening to list some of the things this book does NOT cover:
Voltage regulators (except one for heaters)
Active loads / constant-current sources and sinks
Volume / balance / tone controls
Signal switching
Phono amplifiers / RIAA equalisation
Proper ground schemes (except for one page).

Most of this book is in fact taken up by unnecessarily large figures, fonts and line spacings. Oh, and not forgetting the PAGES AND PAGES OF DERIVATIONS. Most of the time you will find yourself sweeping through many consecutive pages of derivations with virtually no discussion or explanation of why or what is happening, and virtually no clearly articulated conclusion. This stuff should be put in an appendix.

Solid-state components are more-or-less banned by the author as being evil, or something. Even silicon rectifiers are off limits, except for heater and bias supplies where they are apparently OK!?

The translation from the original Dutch is pretty variable. Some passages are broken or even impossible to follow, and many common terms are given weird names like:
Anode Static Steepness (instead of transconductance)
Linear distortion (instead of phase distortion)
Phase Shifter (instead of phase splitter/inverter)
Basic Cathode Circuit (instead of common-cathode amplifier)
Cathodedyne (instead of cathodyne)
SRPP (he makes the rookie error of not knowing the difference between an SRPP and a half-mu stage. There are no SRPPs in this book)

In particular, I wanted to learn about the author's apparently original method for determining optimum ultra-linear tappings, but this section is either so badly written or translated that the method -if any- is impossible to determine.

Referencing is sometimes strange, most of it coming from Menno Van der Veen's books. Sometimes he attributes very old and well-known techniques to articles written by hobbyists in Glass Audio and the like!

This book does not seem to know who it is aimed at. It is far too dense and mathemetical for beginners, but the actual info is too basic for advanced readers. Altogether it feels like it has been written by someone who is himself a well-meaning, self-taught hobbyist who has collected all his knowledge -even the irrelevant stuff- in one place and wants to emulate an academic textbook, but does not have access to many original papers and books. Almost like an oversized undergraduate thesis. These things would all be forgivable in a low-cost self-published book, but I would not have expected a reputable house like Elektor to have agreed to publishing it.

Very disappointing

Scatter shot organization, uneven depth, eye wearying typesetting, difficult translation. Altogether I was so put off I spent less than 10 minutes with it after paying nearly $100. Morgan Jones's book Valve Amplifiers, Third Edition is still the best modern reference in the field.

Unnecessariy heavy on maths and not overly practical, but overall a decent book

After reading some unflattering reviews on Amazon I waited a few years for the price of this book to drop to a $30 something level and then bought it. Overall, a huge and heavy book, which makes its main weakness obvious - the author goes into pages and pages of mostly unnecessary maths and calculations, does not simplify anything. He treats the subject from a typically academic approach - the more maths, the better. So, if you maths skills aren't up to scratch, skip this book, you'll get lost, confused, irritated or all of the above.
This is not a book for builders of tube amps, but aimed, it seems, mostly at designers and those who want to understand the maths and physics of it all.

There are good sides of the book, too. The author isn't flippant, he doesn't dismiss this or ignore that, he covers almost everything. As some reviewers already pointed out, some practical issues and circuits aren't covered, true, so it is not the most practical or comprehensive of manuals (it doesn't claim to be anyway, it is after all called "Fundamental ..."), but what is there is analyzed inside and out, up and down, in all directions, in any possible way. I haven't seen so many calculations in any book on tube technology.

So, while the book is certainly worth its current low price (but not its original price of $100 or thereabouts) and while it isn't a total miss like some others, it will only suit mathematically and theoretically inclined readers.

Hey a Book about Christmas and Hanukkah!

This is the first children's book I know that has a child celebrating both Hanukkah and Christmas. It is nice because it depicts it as normal for that family and doesn't drag by explaining the religious differences of the parents. Very respectful of many children's lives.

My daughter and her preschool class really enjoyed this book. It talks about what kinds of things families do together for the Hanukkah and Christmas holidays (without going into any underlying religion), and is both fun and touching.

More Fantasy, less relationships, please?

Demon Underground is S.L. Wright's sequel to Confessions of a Demon. Wright begins pretty much right at the end of Confessions with the life and times of Allay, a human girl turned demon. Demon Underground is a straightforward urban fantasy novel with a nice blend of action, social interaction and lots and lots of romantic angst.

In Demon Underground, Allay is dealing with the aftereffects of having taken down one of the most powerful demons in New York City. The relationship she had begun with Ram, another very powerful demon, continues as a central theme of the book. Allay is constantly caught up in the tug-of-war between her mistrust of a demon more powerful than herself and an overwhelming sexual and emotional connection with Ram. It's not my favorite part of the book, but it fits with the genre.

Wright parades a number of different demon characters through the story. Many are merely normal demons trying to survive and find a place where they are safe. Some are powerful and manipulative, and don't live by a moral code that Allay can accept. This conflict of morality -- her human values versus the realities of being a demon -- makes for a large part of the difficulties that Allay has to face. She doesn't want to be a bad person, even if her definition of bad doesn't really apply to most demons.

The final theme is the conflict of hiding demons from humankind to avoid persecution. When one of the major demon players in the city makes plans to profit from a possible exposure of demonkind, Allay gets caught up in the middle of trying to stop it or at least protect herself and others from the aftereffects. Her solutions are unique and stressful for her, but that's part of what one expects in urban fantasy.

On the whole Demon Underground is passable. Wright's concept of demons and their symbiotic relationship with humans, introduced in Confessions of a Demon, is still my favorite aspect of the story. It's interesting and plausible enough to be a welcome change from the oversexed vampire/werewolf theme that we are often subjected to. Demon Underground falls short of its predecessor in that it focuses more on politics and relationships rather than continuing to develop innovative fantasy ideas. This series is decent, but not something that you want to place at the top of your to-be-read pile.

Allay tends the Den on C bar in Manhattan's Lower East Side in order to dine off the anguished emotions of human patrons who drink there though she finds doing that an abomination even though she has somewhat adapted. She is a one of a kind type of demon; as she is a human who ingested the life force of a demon. Her scent signature differs from demons who would all love to feed off her. Allay's offspring Bliss seems more adjusted than she while her BFF Shock warns her not to trust Theo Ram who has killed his offspring for many millennia. Allay is attracted to Ram.

Being a unique hybrid places her in an odd position of no one trusting her and thus she is the perfect individual to foster an agreement to end the squabble between powerful fighting demons. However, as she works on the place, Allay has some doubts about what is going on. She fears she is being used as an expendable discard and though feeling paranoid as she believes assassins are flooding the streets with her as a target; she goes underground knowing the hostilities is about to explode into open urban warfare.

The second demon urban fantasy (see Confession of a Demon) continues the Manhattan saga of Allay trying to survive in a world where she feels she does not belong. The action-packed story line will hook readers from the onset as the heroine is trapped in a deadly demonic tug of war. Although it pays dividends to read the first exhilarating thriller to better understand key players especially the heroine, a mix of California mellow and New York shtick, Demon Underground is a super tale.

Series really picking up speed.

DEMON UNDERGROUND was a solid second installment in the Allay series, deepening the development of Allay herself as well as bringing major changes to her world. Wright takes the entire series in a direction I hadn't expected at all, making me very excited to follow up with the next book in the series (and very nervous that I couldn't find hints of the next book on-line).

The Allay series world mythology centers around demons preferring to feed on a particular emotion, and therefore acting in a way, consciously or unconsciously, to elicit this emotion in others. Wright is phenomenally consistent in how she applies this framework, and it is fascinating to watch the interplay of demons, using their names as an extra clue to decode their motives. The demons themselves do this, a sort of cultural reality show where everyone compares notes and makes predictions about other demons' actions and motivations. I felt like I was right on the couch next to Allay and Bliss, passing the popcorn and shouting out guesses. In this way, DEMON UNDERGROUND comes into its own, a more thorough and satisfying dip into the demon world than CONFESSIONS OF A DEMON was able to offer.

Then again, Wright had a lot of ground to cover in her first book. Very little time passes between the end of CONFESSIONS OF A DEMON and the start of DEMON UNDERGROUND, and I enjoyed picking up where I left off. It would not be impossible to read DEMON UNDERGROUND as a stand alone, but I do think you'd miss out on the character nuances and back story from book one (and who would want to do that?). Allay's relationship with Ram develops significantly in this installment, with the extra complications of Bliss and Mystify thrown in to the mix. It was interesting to see Ram's old school attitudes clash with Allay's newly developing sense of "demon right and wrong." Wright strikes a good balance of conflict and compromise, keeping things interesting without being unnecessarily dramatic.

In DEMON UNDERGROUND, Allay truly begins to come into her own as a mover and shaker in the demon world. While it is not clear if her decisions are good ones, they are at least novel (for a demon). My favorite part of the book was when Allay realized that, despite her human origins, she is as much defined by her demon nature and name as any of her peers. I look forward to seeing how this epiphany will affect her decisions in the future.
