Xeroxed paperback

I ordered this book presuming it was the harcover edition. It wasn't. In fact, not only was it paperback, but the pages were PHOTOCOPIED from the original. ALl of the photos and graphics look terrible. It is missing pages here and there, in the body, appendices, and index.

The book itself is a great book. Architectural Acoustics for dummies essentially. Just don't pay $80+ for a cheap photocopy.

Great Reference Book

This is my go-to reference book for room acoustics of large rooms*. Noise control, vibration and audio are lightly covered, but the focus is on room acoustics design of theaters, auditoria and concert halls.

I have the photo-copy edition (which is the only edition available for quite some time). The photographs in the book are not very good, but all of the other figures and text are perfectly clear. I haven't found any missing pages in mine either. It would be nice to have a hard cover with color photos (or at least high quality b/w photos) but the information is what makes this book valuable.

*Of course Egan's is great too, but I find Egan's to be a better self-teaching book for those just getting into acoustics, and this to be a better application book. If you are trying to choose, I recommend getting both.

Best for architects

I used this book for several years in my course of Architectural Acoustics and Noise Control for Architecture students. The book covers the basics of sound to applications of acoustics of real life, like speech auditoriums, theaters and symphonic rooms. The book covers also noise and vibration control and some topics of audio in a very simple way. Maybe some "engineering" or "math" oriented people will feel the book too simple, but the information is very valuable for the architecture student or practicing architect. By the way Egan's book in also highly recommended.

A poorly formatted Kindle edition BUT with excellent content

This is a book for students who are studying the Tudors and the Reformation but isn't particularly good for a reader with a general interest in those subjects - unless it's an intense interest. The book has an immense wealth of great detail about Cromwell and the political framework in which he operated all the way from his beginnings in Cardinal Wolsey's household to his incarceration and execution in the Tower.

Merriman's research from primary sources is superb and he has written precisely and accurately without bias or opinion. He doesn't analyze or opine, but presents historical fact with precision. Frequently, he goes into fine background detail especially with Cromwell's disastrous final negotiations with the German states that resulted in his fall. Henry the VIII's marriage to Ann of Cleves was not the major reason for Cromwell's end, but rather his failed diplomacy resulting in alliances between the Emperor and the King of France.

The latter part of the book contains Cromwell's unedited correspondence from 1523 to 1535 from ranging from personal letters to his wife to letters to Cardinal Pole and Bishop Gardiner and other major and lesser political lights. These are sometimes difficult to read because of Middle English with its superscripts, contractions, and abbreviations. Still, an untrained careful reader can get a good idea of what is being conveyed and they are worth reading for their insights about the depth of Cromwell's thinking.

This book was originally published in 1902 as a textbook and, unfortunately, this Kindle edition was scanned and poorly formatted for the Kindle and scanned anomalies and scan misinterpretations and layout were all unedited so that portions of the text are unreadable. For instance, the lines of text in the footnotes on almost every page frequently are jumbled so that sentences are broken up and chaotically mixed together and are totally unreadable. Because of this, I can't recommend it. There are some hardcopy reprints available and I would suggest those for a serious reader.

An inspiring must have reference work!

It is true that you have to be careful with the binding, but it is the value of the words within that should be the focus of the review. I happened to stumble across this book in a store back in the day when I was still developing my theory of the Paleo-Hebrew vocabulary. Mr. Sampson's work helped to solidify my research direction and more importantly helped me with a couple of matches of the alphabet to their true Egyptian Hieratic match. I can now say his book is an essential reference work and I wish I could read more of his research. There are those who believe that being critical at any level is not appropriate, but I don't believe this helps the author and researcher. Like I said he makes a couple of matches to the Egyptian Hieroglyphs, but is not consistent with this scientific methodology, that poses a weakness in his conclusion. And there are a couple of letters he seemed to be unsure of, but he covered it well. I just would have liked to have seen him follow the scientific process throughout his book. By doing that his work would be that much more powerful. For example he symbolizes the first letter, aleph, as representing Adam, the first man. Then he shows how plugging in Adam into the vocabulary is supposed to show how the word meaning is derived. He comes so close to a description of a determinative that is used in the ancient languages. A scientific mindset would have credited him with the discovery of the use of determinatives in the original alphabet as an example.

I have been looking for this older book for quite awhile. I have the companion book to this one. My five grandsons and their father find these two books very helpful in their Judo trainning. The book arrived quickly and was in very good condition.

it started out great until we got to the part about dog catchers mutilating the stray dogs they catch! Some of the book should definitely be taken with a grain of salt as it is clear the author's advice is based on her experiences in India. Apparently, they have not advanced in veterinary science as much s some countries. Felines in America always live passed ten to twelve years, contrary to what the author says, excluding extenuating circumstances. Still, the basic message behind the book rings true in most cases and it is worth reading.
