Max Lucado...If you want a page turner, this is it. Max has a way of making sense out of your ordinary life, and helps us to understand our lives, and what God would want for us. Very excellent book(s). It makes you stop and think about how you can make your own life better.Very inspirational and thought provoking.

'Good to great' for small companies

If you're not working for a company that needs to worry about scaling out to hundreds of people, and you have no wish to ever do so, then Small Giants: Companies That Choose to be Great Instead of Big by Bo Burlingham is for you. Full of inspiring case studies ranging from two-person shops to small restaurant chains employing hundreds of people, this book analyses what makes small companies tick and how they became great without exploding and ruining the culture. 'Our biggest competition is mediocrity' is my favourite quote from this book, and it perfectly reflects the attitude that most of the case studies promote.

Burlingham identifies several patterns in the case studies, and lays out three imperatives for companies that want to make an impact and stay small:

- Articulate, demonstrate and embed a higher purpose into the company, completely integrating that purpose so that it becomes an everyday presence and not just a vision statement on a piece of paper.
- Create a culture of intimacy that continuously reminds people unexpectedly about how much the company cares about them
- Foster collegiality.

If this sounds as a kind of the place you would like to work at, grab the book and transform your organisation. Essentially, this book is Good to Great, but for organisations that do not want to go public. It's not a particularly new book, but I discovered it recently, and I think it will be valuable for anyone working in startups or thinking of starting one. The book is written in a very clear and engaging style, with lots of great stories, and gets five out of five stars from me.

Small Giant - Surface Level Stories

Purchased this book based on a recommendation from a podcast. I am the owner of two small businesses and found very little value in this book, it is one of the few books I stopped reading after only reading 50%. If you are looking for how to create a Small Giant business, I could not recommend this book. If you are a Small Giant business and looking for inspirational stories it might be worth the read.

Good advice for small business owners

I am a Family Business Advisor. This book offers insights and practical advice that my clients can use. For example:
1. Legal protection is a poor substitute for innovation. I and the book's author are not big fans of patents.

2. If you have no profits, you've got a hole in your business somewhere. If you can't find it, ask for help.

3. University National Bank & Trust, one of the small giants featured in the book, defined their culture BEFORE they defined their strategy. Their leaders were aware of what Peter Drucker often mentioned, "Culture eats strategy for lunch."

Must Have For SuccessFactors Administrators!

I just finished reading SuccessFactors with SAP ERP HCM by Amy Grubb, Luke Marson and Jyoti Sharma and wanted to share very positive feedback with this group! This is a must read book for those in the SuccessFactors world; it is a very comprehensive overview of SuccessFactors including integration and implementation aspects, Cloud software considerations, overview of the complete BizX suite (including the Mobile app), Metadata Framework extensibility, user interface and navigation aspects, SAP Add-Ons and so much more valuable information. The book covers the full range of SuccessFactors modules and is written in a very clear and competent manner. Although technical by nature, the book is invaluable to those that are addicted (like me!) to configuration and implementation aspects of SuccessFactors and most importantly, ensuring customer and end user satisfaction.

If you are planning a SuccessFactors implementation, Amy, Luke and Jyoti offer a detailed introduction to SuccessFactors with valid implementation considerations and strategic thoughts for planning and rolling out a business process, preparing appropriately and identifying involvement needed and by whom to insure realization of delivery and a successful launch. This 500 page book has a tremendous wealth of information that is vastly needed in today's SuccessFactors and SAP universe and I highly recommend it to administrators that are new as well as those experienced, consultants and anyone that is involved in the SaaS and Cloud worlds. Five Stars to Olivia Twisted

Read this in one late-night sitting (which I'm regretting a bit this morning as I pour that third cup of coffee)! Updating Oliver Twist so that the group of orphans are now cyber-thiefs is such a great tw--(okay, can't do the pun) ANGLE on Oliver Twist. To be honest, I don't remember all of the plot points of the Dicken's story to know how closely it aligns with the original, but I was thoroughly entertained regardless, and I LOVED Z's character and how much he wrestled with luring Liv into his ring. Holy hotness!!

Great Retelling

Thrilling, romantic,and very twisted, Olivia Twisted was a fantastic YA retelling. I really enjoyed reading this awesome book.

Going into this book, I was a little unsure. I didn't know how a retelling of Oliver Twist would work. But, it turned out to be pretty awesome. The author managed to turn an old classic into a modern tale.

Olivia was a lovely heroine. She hasn't had the best life, from her druggie mother, to her hopping from foster home to foster home. But, she was still a genuinely good person. She had values that she couldn't compromise, which I think made her an admirable character. I really liked her.

Z was complicated. He delights in his criminal activities, seeing absolutely nothing wrong with them. To his perspective, it's basically like Robin Hood, taking from the rich and giving to the poor. And, he's manipulated people into the web, then left them to fend for themselves. But, he wasn't a bad person. At least, not once he met Olivia Olivia reminded him of...goodness, I guess you could say. She made him rethink his life and see it from a different perspective. He was a morally shaky character. But, I still really liked him. I thought he was great.

The romance was fairly light. It was very sweet. Even though Olivia and Z barely touched each other, besides a few kisses, the feelings were constantly there and it was really adorable. I thought these two were lovely together.

The plot was fast paced. I was kept interested the entire way through, but I was never completely hooked. However, I still really enjoyed the story and I thought the ending was perfect.

Olivia Twisted was a wonderful YA retelling. It was thrilling, romantic, and a really enjoyable read. YA lovers, if you want something that will keep you on the edge of your seat, then you should give this book a try.

An intriguing and imaginative re-telling of Oliver Twist

Olivia Twisted was an intriguing and imaginative modern re-telling of Oliver Twist.

In the beginning, Olivia was withdrawn, for obvious reasons. Throughout the novel, though, she grows into a strong character, able to say no and stand up for herself. There aren’t enough strong female heroine’s in YA, so I loved that Olivia was strong, with a mind of her own. There’s no insta-love with Z, which was refreshing. She was attracted to him, yes, but she didn’t fall all over him. The build-up was slow and realistic. Honestly, Olivia and Z felt like the most believable, realistic YA couple I’ve seen in a long time.

I was not a fan of Z in the beginning. He was too cocky, too full of himself. But throughout the novel, he showed signs of the person he was underneath all that. He had moments of vulnerability that softened me to him, made me like him more. He was like Olivia’s Knight in Shining Armor at certain moments, and I loved how protective he was of her.

I was really suspicious of Olivia’s foster parents right from the beginning. But it was nothing like I expected. I was actually pretty caught off guard by what happened with them. On the flip side, a character I really loved was Sam. She was so fun and easy-going with Olivia, yet so hardened around Z. She had a kind of competitive rivalry with him that almost reminded me of sibling rivalry. It was an interesting dynamic. She always seemed kind of young and vulnerable, despite her tough-as-nails exterior.

The ending was very intriguing. Not only was it not what I expected, but it also broke some YA stereotypes. It wasn’t a cliche happily ever after. I don’t want to spoil it, so I won’t go into further detail. But it was one of my top five favorite endings to a YA novel.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I loved Olivia, I loved the relationship that she builds with Z and I love how realistic and non-cliche it was. I loved that it broke some of the YA stereotypes. I would absolutely recommend this book to others!

President Dwight Eisenhower was so moved at the beating of veteran Alex Wilson that he ordered 1,200 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne to Little Rock, and he federalized the Arkansas National Guard to quell the "disgraceful occurrences." But how did it happen? Little Rock seemed an unlikely place for such violent hatred; it did not even see itself as part of the deep south and had voluntarily decided to integrate the schools. Essays by Bob McCord, Ernie Dumas, and Will Campbell chart the path leading to the crisis, as well as the impact of the crisis on the civil rights movement.Young Will Counts had only been with The Arkansas Democrat for about 3 months on that fateful Labor Day in 1957. Recently graduated from the Ernie Pyle School of Journalism at Indiana University he had been pleased to get a job with his own hometown newspaper, though he didn't expect to see much action. Little Rock, after all, was not a very large city, and didn't offer much opportunity to capture "the essential image," that elusive photographic ideal that distills an entire story into one magical image. And he knew that his preference for a small 35mm camera rather than the larger "news" cameras then in vogue meant his pictures would have to compete with those larger negatives preferred by editors everywhere.All in all, he was not expecting much from his first job. Governor Orval Faubus' surprise decision to surround Central High with Arkansas National Guard troops and prevent 9 black students from entering changed everything. The prospect of covering a major civil rights story in his own hometown was exhilarating. He headed for the school armed with a "blend-in" flannel shirt and his beloved 35mm camera. Three "Life Magazine" staffers: Francis Miller, Grey Villette, and Paul Welch found that their large cameras (and their coats and ties!) quickly identified them as outsiders. They were attacked by the mob (and adding insult to injury) arrested by the police. Will was able to move freely through the crowds and was accepted everywhere as a native son. Many feel that his photographs captured the essence of those dark days and he was unanimously recommended for the Pulitzer Prize by the photography committee that year." For more than 30 years these photos served as the foundation for Will's photo journalism courses at Indiana University. Goaded by the claims of a student that Central High was not better off for his efforts in 1957 Will decided to return to Little Rock and see for himself what impact, if any, the photos had. He returned to Central High to take a new series of photos and managed to find many the most important people in his original photographs. Much has happened to them in 40 years and Will, the consummate storyteller, gives voice to their lives. This is a book that does show some of the most ugly hatred in life, but in the end, it is also a book of hope and reconciliation.

As a new photographer with the Arkansas Democrat, Counts was sent to cover the desegregation of his alma mater, Central High School in Little Rock, in 1957. His ties to the town and to the school helped him blend in and take stunning photos of the social upheaval that resulted when the nine enrolling black students faced virulent resistance by most white citizens, including the governor, Orval Faubus. The text includes interviews with some of the black students integrating the school, including Elizabeth Eckford, a black girl tormented by the mob. Among the essays is one by Hazel Bryan, who was captured by Counts' camera jeering Eckford in a photo that portrayed Bryan in that moment as the "poster child of the hate generation." Counts also photographed the fortieth anniversary commemoration of the race crisis in Little Rock. Great summary and big picture view

This book is a thoughtful summary of the events of the 1957 Central High Crisis, especially for those who don't have the time or inclination to delve into the details but want to know all about the history behind the crisis and the events at that time. What makes the book even more interesting is that the authors take you inside Central High School forty years later so that the reader can see the life and times of a academically successful and fully integrated CHS today. Of course, one of the greatest contributions are the photographs by the late Will Counts -- awarding winning photography that carries you back in time. I highly recommend the book for students over age 12 and anyone who desires an accurate account of this shameful yet historic civil rights event.

Dramatic Pictures, and hope for the future

Little Rock was the first time since reconstruction that federal troops had been mobilized top protect Blacks seeking to exercise the rights they allegedly won in the aftermath of the Civil War. The terror, hatred, and brutality of the times is searingly captured by the iconic photo which gives the book its title--of a young white student screaming, her face contorted, at an equally young black girl. Equally appalling is the other major picture which forms the center of this work--a series showing the mob attacking a black reporter, and beating him with no one willing to intervene.
While the book would be worthwhile for the pictures alone, it is all the more compelling by bringing the story up to date. Centered around the fortieth anniversary of desegregation of Little Rock High School, the author tracks down both the black student and the white student spewing hatred. There are pictures of them together, having gone through a process of healing and reconciliation.
The ultimate question--why such hatred--is not answered, nor could it be, given the format and limitations of what is, af4er all, basically a book of narrated pictures. But the question is certainly raised and explored.
This is a great book and should be on the shelf of anyone who loves photography or wants to understand why the Civil rights movement was so important to the history of this country (although I would strongly urge that no one take the advice f the other reviewer, and use this as the primary source for information on this struggle).
My only criticism is that the upbeat tone of this volume needs to be questioned. As James Meridith has said--If a black man can be kicked ten times in open view, and has no redress, is it really "improvement" if he is only kicked nine times, but still has no redress? Is Little Rock really free of prejudice and discrimination? Is America?

Dropped Back in Time---1957

I purchased this book to accompanying the book my high school classes are currently reading, "Warriors Don't Cry." As a high school teacher, I realize that students are likely to more fully engage with a novel when they feel they can truly relate to the story and when they are able to imagine all that is happening. "A Life is More Than a Moment" makes this possible! As we read the novel, I share pictures from this text with my students. They love this book. Often they ask to read this book even on their own, excitedly reporting their newfound knowledge with their classmates. I would definitely recommend this book for someone who is intersted in seeing the real thing.

Excellent work for egyptology fans

It's an excellent work about the cultural and historical settings in which the Rosetta Stone was carved. It's also the only work that I know that has the translation of the three scripts that appears in the Rosetta Stone: hieroglyphs, demotic and greek.

The Thrifty Man's Gateway to Demotic Egyptian

This is one of the most inexpensive ways to acces up-to-date presentations of notably Egyptian Demotic Writing / Late Egyptian language.

This product is a life-size and very legible poster of the Rosetta Stone, a minor historical document in itself but a centerpiece of hundreds of years of top-notch scholarship, the public domain highlight of which is the German interlinear presentation, 1922's "Der demotische Text der Priesterdekrete von Kanopus und Memphis (Rosettana) mit den hieroglyphischen und griechischen Fassungen und deutscher Uebersetzung nebst demotischem Glossar", which is in German.

The booklet to the poster in this product notably contains Carol Andrews' (1988) transliteration of the Demotic of the Rosetta Stone. It also contains the transliteration of the Hieroglyphic / Middle Egyptian and maybe of the (Koine-relative) Greek. It contains an up to date prose translation for each as well, and then sundry comments.

Carol Andrews also came out with a little book with some of this in it as well.

Now, the 1922 book I mentioned contains a complete glossary in Late Egyptian alphabetic order, with Demotic and etymological Egyptian Hieroglyphic Script, which I think is a rarity in Egyptology. So this product you see here is a very cheap way to interact with the Egyptian Demotic, impress your friends, and prepare for your next expedition to Egypt or the Cliff Dwellings of Arizona, same idea.

Budge put out a book in English which is now in the public domain and free online on the Rosetta Stone, which gave an interlinear for the Hieroglyphic and his age's best attempt at transliterating and translating the Demotic and the rest. This interlinear is helpful in figuring out which word is which in the Demotic. Maybe.

As far as a cheap way of accessing the Demotic script, there is Maria Betro's Egyptian Hieroglyphs book, but there's also free old works online the titles of which I forget. Find the free online Demotic primer linked to from the Wikipedia page and you'll have all the basics necessary (if you carefully study that book). And I have a blog and Facebook group on Egyptian languages, but why mention more than the name of the group "Free Lessons in Egyptian Hieroglyphic".

Demotic is just really cursive Egyptian. It's really weird. If you've studied cursive Chinese, you'll be able to relate. It's much easier than cursive Chinese, though, because of the alphabet, which is layed out in the free primer I mentioned. The alphabet is used in almost every single word, despite having up to three variants for each letter based on positioning. Demotic is really something you do after working on hieroglyphic for a while, as it's hard to understand the squiggles without thinking of what they're cursive of.

Anyway, there's tons of letters and other riveting documents in Demotic. Get the Mammoth Eyewitness Book of Ancient Egypt and see. You really haven't experienced the ancient Egyptian languages until you've done extensive work with original Demotic texts of some lasting interest. Finally, this product is something you can actually buy and hold in your hands. Because most of the affordable Demotic texts are in the public domain or free on academia.edu and will probably always be trapped inside your comptuer, so to speak.

The Rosetta Stone is also one of the world's great polyglot ancient texts. The Behistun Inscription is much cooler for content and "linguistic and writing system diversity", though, unless you just like how Egyptian Hieroglyphic really looks like pictures of things, which it really and uniquely does.
